Tube or Stick?

Senator, I noticed that Fox makes theirs in either tube, stick, or solid frame. Do you know what the difference is? I'm thinking tube construction is a metal shaft and stick is wood all the way. Would that influence your decision?

Personally, I would lean toward either stick or solid if that meant I had all wood constuction from the handle to the tip.

And definitely whanghee, old boy!

Yes, that's what I've been told by Fox, Baggers. Tube=metal. Stick=solid wood The stick obviously also serves as a walking stick.

I've been waffling on this decision for two months and that's why I started this thread. Black leather or polished is going to go with most of my wardrobe. Whanghee says posh, and I like posh. Black is good for autumn/winter. Whanghee for spring/summer. Thus, I'm leaning toward leather right now, and if I hit the lottery, Whanghee for spring.

I figured as much. And if you go into the online shop it explains the differences quite clearly.

Of course you know best what would be appropriate for your first acquistion, but the whanghee really calls to me. My style is very "colonial" or "country gentleman" at this point, and I don't anticipate needing a more formal looking umbrella any time in the foreseeable future. But they don't do it in solid construction so I'll have to settle for the stick.

However I just priced one in black twill nylon with a silver engaved collar. Yikes, I wish the Dollar hadn't taken such a drubbing over the last few months. Oh well, I may be mulling this over the next several weeks myself. Besides, where I live, we haven't had significant rain in months and we're not expecting any for a while so buying an umbrella right now might be considered wishful thinking.

Then again, it might work as a talisman and bring back the wet weather. I can hear my wife now, "Hon, why did you buy an umbrella? Do you know something I don't?" lol

Mess Hockey

Brigg umbrelleas on a stick frame (usually of solid Hickory or similar) are excellent for using as hockey sticks in informal Mess Hockey tourneys!

OK - that is a peculiar thing to we Englishmen perhaps - but you could substitute your office for the Mess!!

I don't have the money for such a thing, and I don't know if I'd spend it on something like an umbrella even if I had it. I'm not sure if those umbrellas aren't too heavy for my taste anway. But - if I had to pick one, I'd probably go for a smooth dark matt handle, and a hidden flask.

I see that one can get different canopy colours with the Fox umbrellas. One umbrella I would like to get from Fox in the near future would be a "country" umbrella, with the doghead handle and racing green canopy. When not used as an umbrella, it would also make for a great decorative object in the house.

How'd the Not-A-Whangee turn out, anyway?

I loved my whangee-handled fox frame umbrella; that is until some person of excellent taste picked it up and kept it after I foolishly left it on the 'bus... However I am now growing very fond of my (second) spare umbrella with what I understand to be a malacca handle. The frame isn't up to much but the handle is developing a very nice patina, even though it can't be much over thirty years old (much like me in that respect...)
