I had a chance to check out this umbrella while Deckard was in NYC. It feels like a nice solid piece.

Is there a material difference between Senator Jack and Deckard's umbrellas that caused one to fray? Could the fraying be due to frequent use?

Just got my Fox Umbrella!

After having one go missing in the mail, I finally received my new Fox umbrella. I got the metal shaft model, GT1, with the plain wood "Dark Grained" handle. I'll post pix this weekend when I get the chance, but here are my first impressions:
At first sight it doesn't really look as if the build quality is ten times better than the $10 Chinese made one I was previously carrying. However the old one's handle had come loose from the shaft and it wiggled all the time, so I assume the attachment of the handle will be more solid on the British one. The rest of the construction seems very nice, so I can only wait till we get some good nasty wet weather to really test it out. But I'm happy!

Deckard, did you have any trouble getting your umbrella on the plane? I am going to want to travel with my brolly soon and I'm not keen on running into TSA issues at the airport at the last minute.

Personally, I prefer the fit-up (two piece) or solid stick varieties as I think the steel tube ones would not stand a chance in the blowing wind. Also, when you use it, people will see that it is no ordinary umbrella bought from some market stall when the soild/wooden shaft is exposed.

Another good thing is that you can get these umbrellas repaired prolongling their life rather than chucking them in the bin. You can also have the metal or rubber ferrule replaced when it is worn out.

I currently have a James Smith & Sons fit-up in hickory with silver collar (which I had engraved with my initials). They cut the ferrule to your specs whilst you wait (the length is determined by you testing on an adjustable walking stick).

I'm thinking of getting a JS&S scorched whangee or a Brigg solid oak next (trying to judge which will be appropriate in the next coming months and weather).
