Sheer Dresses and Blouses

When it comes to sheer dresses or blouses, is a slip all that is nessesary to wear under them? I make my own dresses from vintage patterns and I am wondering if I can use slips I already have for sheer materials or if I should make a "slip liner dress" for each one. Thanks.

Yes, m'aam! A slip will do it! They made really neat patterned slips sometimes in the late 30's that would go under sheer dresses of all one color to make them a bit more snazzy for special occasions, too :)

Ooh... wonderful. Thank you. I thought that is what it was, but I wasn't exactly sure, since you technically would be seeing "underwear" through the dress. Yay! I am really excited to make a sheer dress now!

But even though you're wearing a slip, make sure that you wear light color underwear also...no slip is going to hide a black pair of panties under a sheer dress...go for white or beige.

I remember all of my Mom's sheer or lace cocktail dresses and suits in the '50s coming with a slip or an inner dress/lining in the same color as the dress, or, with colored lace, either white or the same color. They are made to match the outer dress, and the inner ones are not technically slips, they are inner dresses. In other words, if you are making a sheer dress, then you will have to pick up satiny material that matches the color of the dress, and make a shoulder strap dress to fit under the dress.
And no, they were not "underwear", as a matter of fact, I think my Mom wore petticoats under this inner dress.
In any case, foundations are a must.

Yeah... That sounds like something I would do... wear black panties under a white dress... *makes mental note not to do that*

That is what I was wondering... if it was a slip or an underdress...

although, if you are gold digging that night, wearing the darker unmentionables, would definetely get the guys attention!:D

Hehehee... actually I do it differently... In a sea of supertanned, short skirted, tight cami cleavage showing gals... I come in with style and class and win the men over with conversation! Hahahahaha

Sheer Blouse?

Please don't make fun of me but I am curious about something. I acquired some very seethru blouses that are gorgeous that I am selling soon and because of this I have been noticing them more for sale.
When exactly did this style begin or end? What was worn underneath ( a camisole or bra or both?)
I just cannot imagine seeing these worn today though like I said they are gorgeous and with the heat wave across the nation practical to boot.
Did only bad girls wear them back then? [huh]
Thanks, Sandy

Sheer blouses and dresses were very popular in the 1920s-50s. Women would wear a pretty slip underneath to make the dress more modest.

I have several in different colors; some have pretty pintucking and embroidery, giving them a very sweet, "good girl" look.

they actually don't look too bad with a nice camisole underneath, when done right, it really dresses up the look. Around town, I've seen them mostly with a regular tank top.

Thank you. I find it absolutely fascinating with all the sex blasted in our faces today that the older clothes are much more sexier than the new ones.
Must of driven the men mad to guess so much but be so teased. :)
No wonder so many baby boomers were born when the men came back from war.
Then they covered up their heads and hands. Almost a conflict of interest. :)

that brings up a point that I find interesting that you ask a roomful of guys what looks sexier to them; some girl dressed as a boy toy or a well dresses woman, most are going to say the well dressed woman.
There was a poll being taken for what was considered 'sexy' . Curiosity piqued, I had to see how people voted. They took the same actress but in two different looks, one in a very sexy revealing outfit and another in a modest one. The votes for the modest picture far outweighed the revealing one's. Interesting when seeing what most people where in public and what is considered 'popular'.

I wear them with little camisols or strappy tank tops with built-in support. I have a lovely sheer 40s dress that sat in my closet for months before I found a slip for it.

These days I see a lot of women wearing just a really fancy bra underneath sheer, patterned blouses. Never did get up the courage for that. ^_^ Mom does it all the time, though.

This blouse is sheer, and has a peek-a-boo back. Traits many would consider racey. But its one of the most conservative items I own.

i love sheer blouses, especially the ones ive see in light green or yellow. unfortunately i only own a modern, but vintage-style, sheer blouse because its not as sheer as the vintage ones i have found and has a little more forgiveness for what you wear under it.

i have yet to find a nice simple camisole that can work under everything!

I recently bought this on sale from Newport News

I'm not sure what else I'm going to wear with it yet. My style of dressing is always "romantic" rather than accurate adherence to a particular era. I prefer the late 1940s and early 1950s, but with a soft, romantic interpretation.

Does anyone have suggestions for me of an ensemble using this blouse?:)

Thank you!

That is very pretty. Any kind of aqua or seagreen is my favorite color.
I love to see the vintage brocades one sees from time to time in this color so maybe you could find a vintage skirt of some kind. [huh]

I have quite a few original 30s and 40s vintage blouses and dresses that are see through and they came with slips. They all have 2 little piece of ribbon sewed into the shoulders with press-studs so that a slip could be held in place. Ingenious really!

I recently bought 2 new vintage inspired pieces. A silk dress from Cue Design (which I swear has been made from a 30s pattern) and is very see-through. This came with a satin slip and has the 40s style little clips to hold the slip in place also! As does a sheer organza puff sleeve blouse I bought from Colorado. Until now I've never seen these little fasteners in a modern piece of clothing.
