Second batch of Stetson Hat Ad's

Again these are from the 1940's. You can pick them up in old magazines, and folks are selling them on Ebay. There are some in the book "Stetson Hats 1865-1970"

I got a bunch of these on Ebay recently also. Some time I'll have to frame them and put them up in my office (which is why I bought them)...

I bought a bunch of weird anti-nazi propaganda Stetson ads from WWII. They're very dramatic, and pretty neat. If anyone is interested, I'll scan some when they arrive and post 'em.

Great Ads

I noticed the ad that said "How to get that thoroughbred look" shows a hat that looks very similar to the gray fedora that Jeff Bridges wore in Seabiscuit.

the only ads I see today made with the same attention to detail are current Camel Cigarette ads.

They are drawn and have the old school flair.

I wonder if Stetson would sell more hats if they went back to the old way of doing ads... especially in this environment where men are starting to dress up again.

As for Stetson using this type of ads again? They won't get me to buy anything again till they start making quality fedora's again.

I got one of those propaganda ads today...but I'm expecting a couple more, so I'll just scan 'em and post 'em all when I get everything.

I got a really classy ad for the Stetson Whippet today, too.

by the way, Fisk...which models of modern Stetson did you have that you hated so much? I've only owned vintage Stetsons, so I can't speak to the new ones' quality (and I know you can) - but I handled a brand new Stetson Sovereign (I don't know how to spell it and I'm too tired to find out) at a hat shop recently, and I have to say, it was...not bad. Very thin felt, and really nice finishing - that is to say, not "fuzzy" in the slightest. Seemed like a pretty nice hat, but of course I didn't care for the block or the bash.

Of all the Stetson's I've owned, the two most recent ones were "The Ark" and "The Temple"... they both tapered at the slightest hint of moisture.

What are you specifically talking about? How much moisture? A foggy day, a spring rain, or a thunderstorm downspout?

And what specifically tapers? The crown gets tighter, or are you saying that the brim curled?

I am just curious....I have NEVER had any distortion on my new Optimo's or my extensive (although you guys have eclipsed me) vintage hats.

The new Stetsons, at least the Temple, and Nostalgia, will turn into a cone the first time they get damp. Cheap felt. regards, Fedora(another dirt farmer)

If you mean the CURRENT offerings like on Miller hats or other places...and the thing turns back into an unblocked cone shape? Wow must be very very cheap fur. I guess I get what you are saying.

I have also run into problems with the late model Stetsons out there. I have owned a "Temple" and it not only had taper right out of the box (didn't look bad out of the box either, but for an "Indy" hat, it was really a joke, though not as bad of a joke as those dorfmans...but anyway, there's another forum for all this.) but got worse when I tried to adjust the front pinch. Then I wore it in the snow a time or two and was rewarded with more taper and discoloration of the felt (it turned kinda reddish-pink in places were it got really wet). The SAME THING happened to another late model Stetson, a non-Indy style, I believe it was called the "Saxon". Tapered and discolored (same "pinky" color too, even though the felt was dyed gray, not brown like the temple.) just like the Temple. I used to have a couple of vintage Stetsons, they belonged to my Great-Grandfather and those were nice, nice hats. I got one completely saturated in a swimming pool as a kid (a non-clorine pool that you fill up with a garden hose) and it dried overnight and kept it's shape and color. I miss those hats...
