Seal leather samples for ANJ-4 poll

Chalk and cheese. Older the better every time.
This one has the seal hh trim so is better than the cheaper Steerhide version which was russet. I just prefer the dense pile of the Merino fleece. I also prefer the snaps on the pockets and throat latch ; the button pockets are less practical. I know the history as the original owner found it too small so it's almost unworn.
A 44 would be better for me as the early patterns were not quite right but this will do for now. The modern Eastmans use quithe a short pile at 18 mm. Aero use 22 mm which is perfect. I think this is very similar but curly.

John, the Anj-4 shown in the second row, 4th from right. Is that a RMC ? Doesn't that have all the qualities you are looking for ?

Ah! Apologies, my mistake. I remember Andrewhaving to correct somebody once, but I obviously misremembered the right answer!

The kids in school would probably call him Dr Swatland. That's a relative rarity, too: I've only ever personally met one other individual in primary or secondary education in the UK who took their education that far. Of course that may have changed in the last twenty-odd years (I don't have children and so have little connection with schools now). It's certainly become a lot more common in generations of university academics behind mine, as it's no longer possible to get into a long term career in academia without a PhD.

Yes, yes - elongate it to make the proportions look all wrong, make the pockets canvas instead of leather, and probably add a badly-designed hood.

Sloan's right he'd triple the price, but you could probably find something that would look exactly the same as the Cabourn one if you typed "Flying jacket" into the 70s section of eBay's "Vintage Clothing" area.

You are so right as well about needing a PhD for seriously pursuing a career in academia. An old mate back home had to do just that. His faculty told him a MA wouldn't cut the mustard if he wanted to go far in Ancient History!

I was lucky - I got in just before that happened. I was supposed to be doing one part time way back when, but it never quite happened. Not done me any career harm, but it sured hasn't helped the imposter syndrome so many of us suffer from in that job! ;-)

They are interesting, aren't they? Never thought the jerky HH would win through the way it has, I was convinced the vicenza was a cert! In the end I went with goat: it's hard wearing, looks great, it's historically accurate and probably the lightest of the three skins. It's been an interesting discussion, though, and hopefully it'll be handy for anyone else thinking about their ANJ. I'm kinda surprised nobody went for a curve ball and recommended oil-pull! Any way, it should be here next week, so we'll see the results then!

You're one of the lucky ones then Edward I briefly entertained the idea of doing a PhD but I was thoroughly sick and tired of study by the end of my masters that I buggered off and went travelling instead!

Seriously Sloan, I reckon that you have, to quote that Indiana Jones film, chosen wisely

Goat is underrated. You just have to put a bit more work into it to get that patina going. I know I'm harping on (and I always bring it up when goat is mentioned) but FL member Mike1973's goat civvy A-2 has one of the very best leather patinas you will ever see. Wear yours like a mad man and it'll look the same.

Nice Chrissy prezzie to look forward to. I hope the weather goes completely tits up for the next two to three months and you get to wear it non-stop!

Ours is a bit all over the shop as well, had a foot of snow and minus temps for the last week but today it decided to coax itself to +2 so all that snow has turned into a soggy mess. I'd be better off with a pair of sensible wellies and a wetsuit today.
