It was coming along, but when I bought the Langlitz and ordered another, I decided to part with the Chopper and put it up on eBay. Vanson definitely requires some patience when breaking in, but they do turn out very nice once they start to soften. And yes, the creaking noise does eventually fade with the break in process.

Yes, the Vanson competition weight cowhide breaks in very nicely. While very stiff at first, over a year or so, it becomes soft and pliable--a very nice leather. Another poster called his well broken in Vanson an "old softie." While mine hasn't reached that stage yet, it is very comfortable to wear and is certainly thick enough to give good protection in the event of an involuntary dismount.

As to the squeak, I found a good solution. Someone on this board suggested putting talcum powder on the stitches. I did it a little differently on my Johnson jacket made of the extremely tough cowhide. I got an old toothbrush and used it to put Pecard on the stitches and down into the stitch holes. Only did it on the sleeves as that was the only place the jacket was squeaking. Squeak gone. Took about 20 minutes.

If you don't have access to Pecard, any good quality conditioner of that consistency (light wheel bearing grease) should do the job. There are a couple of German conditioners of that consistency that I have used to good effect. Passier Lederbalsam comes to mind. My wife probably picked up the German conditioners at our local English tack store.

My theory is that the thick, tough hides are often the ones that squeak the most where the thread rubs against the hide. But it doesn't happen on all of the thick hides. Seems I have heard comments about the Lost World jackets being squeaky, and they are mostly the thickest hides Stuart can find. So, those of you with Lost Worlds, and who want to rid your jacket of the squeak, now you know how to do it.

Damo: Yes, unfortunately my Schott naked cowhide Cafe Racer did shrink a bit when exposed to a light misting rain on the motorcycle. I noticed it more in the sleeves. Before, they were a perfect length. Now they are almost too short.

The Schott is the jacket I mostly pack on trips away from home when I know I probably won't be wearing a jacket all of the time on the motor. It is the lightest weight of my MC jackets, so it takes up less room in the saddle bag. By contrast, my heavy Johnson Leathers jacket would take up most of the saddle bag, if it would even fit in it. As a result of being worn on so many trips, the Schott has developed an excellent patina. For this reason I am reluctant to treat it with a conditioner in an attempt to make it more water resistant. I hate to destroy years of developed character in exchange for some water resistance. The way I deal with the problem of water absorbency is to wear a rain jacket over the Schott if there is more than a slight probability of rain. On my trips, if it is cool enough for a leather jacket, it is also cool enough for a rain jacket over the leather.

The Schott liner does add good warmth to the jacket. I usually leave mine rolled up in a small space in a saddle bag so it is available if the weather turns colder while on the trip. I will start out the morning with a vest under the jacket that can be removed as the day warms. In the late afternoon with dropping temps, the process is reversed, with the liner being worn if necessary.

So, the Schott is a versatile MC jacket that has the one drawback of absorbing water in the rain. It is my trip jacket with the work around of wearing a rain jacket over it if rain is probable. P.C.

Thanks for the rain coat idea. You mentioned your Johnson leather jacket, what type of leather and thickness did you use?

Got the first Johnson as a street wear jacket. It was the standard 3 oz. soft cow that is broken in straight from the box. Liked the fit (V taper) and workmanship so well that I ordered one strictly for riding. This one was the heavy, 4+ oz., cow in the hide that Alan said was made for the Japanese market. It is a tough hide. Weighs in at 7.5 lbs in a size 46. Beautiful fit with a nice V taper from shoulders to waist. No extra material anywhere on the jacket.

Peacoat, that's my approach as well. I prefer my leather to my textile jackets for riding too, and weather-permitting that's what I usually end up going for. I too find the Schott 141 a versatile mc jacket as I can wear it for long distance riding (with armored shirt underneath) as well as wear it as a casual jacket off my bike. I was considering the 641 due to its better wet-weather capabilities, but have too many jackets in this style so will hold off on it for now.

I too carry a rain jacket to wear over my leather jacket in case of rain. With my other leather jackets that dob't have a warm liner (LW Buco Rider and various Vansons), I wear a primaloft jacket underneath when I need warmth.

The jacket fits you nicely.
From experience the 641 would have fitted you more to
Your taste From what I read in your posts

How was the break in for the heavy motorcycle jacket? Do you ever wear it casually or do you find it too heavy? I'm interested because I'm in the final details stage with Alan on a jacket using the overdye in 4.25 ounce.

Yeah thats exactly what it was. Originally I was thinking of getting the 641 in horse or steer but I wasn't able to try it on and the 141 was $300 less expensive so I jumped on it. I don't have much experience with leather, i've handled a vanson chopper, roland sand clash and ronin and a few samples here and there. Regarding the 141 I really love the leather, its so soft to touch, supple and pliable already. Also smells great too...Because of these qualities (not the aroma) I'm able to get the length of jacket that I want off the bike and while on the bike it doesn't ride up into my throat.

Regarding the size i'm still toying with the idea of taking an inch or two off the chest but i'm not sure if its because the chest isn't fitting how I would like or is it due to the extra material used for the underarm footballs. Anyways I'm extremely happy with the jacket.

Is one of your schott jackets made out of the heavy steerhide? I'm considering a brown 618 in heavy steer. I like the perfecto style and also the brown colour aswell. I was thinking it would be nice to have a perfecto style jacket by either aero or lost worlds but I have a tough time wrapping my head around the price difference between either of those compared to the schott 618. I think Schott was the originator of the perfecto? From what i've read the aero and lost worlds are better quality and use different types of leather (i know some of this is subjective and still up for debate) but regardless I take price into account and Schott's are much less expensive and still a bad ass, great jacket!

I wouldn't mind a brown 141, and have come close a couple of times to grabbing one. I had an easy rider which was a cool jacket, and I often regret moving it on....I'm always in two minds with the naked leather...it feels nice, but I'm not too keen on its inability to cope with a soaking on the bike. Anyway, I think yours looks great, enjoy it mate.

It is still a work in progress, and I have had it for 2 1/2 years (it's not the overdye leather). I got it in probably July, 2012 and wore it around the house until September when it was cool enough to ride on the motor. I think by about Thanksgiving it was broken in enough to be comfortable while riding. It will still stand on its own, however. It is one tough piece of leather.

No, it is still a bit too stiff to wear as a casual jacket. The weight doesn't bother me, but the stiffness does. I really shouldn't say it bothers me, because it is comfortable, but I have 4 or 5 other leather jackets that are not dedicated MC jackets that I find more comfortable to wear on a casual basis. I don't wear any of my dedicated MC jackets on a casual basis.

Thanks bunyip, I find that naked brown leather schott uses to be quite dark and rich looking. I likely very much

@peacoat

Wow 2.5 years and still not broken in yet. Interesting point about how the stiffness of the jacket bothers you for casual use. I never took that into consideration when thinking about which type of leather to use for a casual or motor jacket. I would like to get jackets in the various hides just to see how they differ and which one i prefer.

I don't own a steer one, but might be in the near future. As far as the perfecto being badass, yes it is. I own one and they are great jacket. Price Wise they are the best bang for the buck.
