Wow, this is all very touching, very moving. Thank you all for your kind words and sentiments. Thank you Fred for turning this into its own thread, as I felt in retrospect that I had unfortunately hijacked the original thread.
It's tough going right now, as there is so much around me that reminds me of my father. Not the least of which are my two trusty Springer Spaniels, a breed he introduced our family to when I was a child (and have loved ever since).
His field jacket now hangs at the entrance to my "War Room". As time goes on and the pain of his loss subsides some I'll bring his surviving Army artifacts to the fore and combine them into one nice display - a tribute to the man who was more than just my father. He was my best friend.
I miss him terribly.

From Paddy...

My condolences, Chris, on the passing of your Dad.

No matter how many times one goes through these losses, they never seem to get any easier, as nothing can replace a person you love and have bonded with and essentially is a 'part of YOU.'
It's a horrible, traumatic time to go through and does leave a huge 'gap' in life for those near and dear. But the positive is, that he 'is' still very much a part of 'you.' He will always be with you Chris, because he 'is you.' Everytime you zip around on those fantastic bikes of yours, or take the Springers out on a hike, your dad will be there.

You take care of yourself my friend over this sad time. Paddy.

Chris,

I too am just seeing the news of your father's passing want to offer my condolences as well. I remember well how he was scooting everywhere he could at Reading and seemed to be having a great time. He held up better in the heat than I did!

August 3 is the one year anniversary of my mother's death so i know well what a void is left in your life and your heart. He'll live on in your heart and the air warden's hut, too!

Take care, Mary S.

Sorry to hear this.
He was very fortunate to have a son who both respected him, and appreciated, his deeds so much. Many fathers never experience that.
