OK, here's what happened:
My friend Howie works in a boutique video store in Manhattan.
He knows everybody in town. For example, Bernie Madoff was a regular customer who kept renting videos until they took away his credit cards. Now his wife rents them for cash.
People with lots of money call him up to request the cream of the cream. And since Howie knows more about movies than almost anybody, he usually able to satisfy their desires.
His video store also services all the big hotels. One day awhile back, he gets a call from the Hotel Pierre. A Russian Big Shot wants to rent Russian gangster videos, the more violent and bloody the better. Howie can barely make out what the Russian guy is saying, so he talks to a member of the hotel staff.
Howie knows the Russians he has dealt with in the past seldom if ever return his videos, so he tells the hotel staffer that these are extremely rare videos and if lthey are not returned, the replacement fee will be $500 each. So he gets an OK and sends his only two really gory Russian Gangster videos over with a courier.
A month passes and the videos are not returned. They go through the billing process with the Hotel Pierre. The charges are passed on to the customer's credit card. Another month passes
Yesterday, the statement comes through with notice that the bill has been paid in full.
The name on the invoice: Vladimir Putin.
