Rudeness

I think people are ruder now but I also suspect it comes from no respect. People are only interested in themselves and this is cultivated, for example a T-shirt that says "I'm the princess" and the like. There is nothing wrong in being proud and thinking highly of yourself providing you have humility and respect for your fellow man. Unfortunatly that is fast disapearing. This is just my observation.

Everyone I know comments that when they go to New Zealand where I'm from, it's like they "Stepped back in time - everyone is so friendly!"

I'm proud of that. I know there are always exceptions. At least it's not as bad as here in the UK. People screaming at each other in the street, pushing past to get on when you're trying to get off a train/bus/tram, shop assistants who ignore you for as long as they possibly can. The list is endless. I want to believe people are nicer than they generally are but I'm not seeing much evidence lately. I am always nice to people who are serving me. I smile, say please and thank you and try to acknowledge that they are people by making a small comment rather than just hand over the money like they are machines.

Maybe it's because it's so crowded? People retreat into themselves and care only about themselves. What's so wrong with caring about other people? I do think that not having the sense of community makes people more self centred. If you knew something you did would upset your neighbour with whom you are friendly/aquianted, you'd think twice about doing it, right?
