NEW YORK - One of Norman Rockwell's most famous paintings, discovered hidden behind a fake wall in its owner's Vermont home, has sold for $15.4 million.

WoW!

We discussed that painting in my history of illustration class. We talked about all the planning in the characters and composition and the story it was telling...man, to see that puppy in person.

Seeing ANY Rockwell in the flesh is a treat. A real treat.

So, it's been acknowledged as "lost" for all these years?

.

Nope. There was a copy that had been mistaken for the real thing. Then this pops out of the wainscotting!

I think it's kinda kitschy, myself.

I wonder why they didn't keep it. That would have been a priceless piece to have hanging in your own home.

and Mr.Bern always seems to be the one who brings NEWS to the Lounge. Where does he get his information....

On Hiatus. Really. Or Not.
$15.4 million reasons...

A lot easier to divide the dough among the heirs... I'll take the Rockwell this week... No you had it for 72 days last year but your were only allocated 71.76...

all of Rockwell's stuff is kinda kitschy. that's why it's so popular. he's still a great painter. (and one of the first sources for my discovery of 40s clothing. his work is full of great clothes. and he always makes them look gently worn in and comfortable).

If you say so...

I'm not disputing his technical ability, but his work looks best where it was intended to be - on a middleborw magazine cover, or in advertising. I find it a little cardboard and boring. And the subject is so sappy. Just not my cup of tea.

Now Edward Hopper's Hotel Window, prevously owned by Steve Martin, also went at this auction. That's a great painting and a REALLy great painter.

i didn't say i thought he was a great fine artist. i agree that his work is MERELY illustration intended for magazines. but i can appreciate illustration, even kitsch illustration if it's done well.i also agree that Hopper is a really great painter, in the fine art sense, though technically i think he's way behind Rockwell.

I can honestly say he was a great artist. His illustrations actually look like what he was portraying. There once was a time when artists could paint that which a camera could and still can't capture. Rockwell did this and his illustrations deserve a place among other artists without doubt.
If someone can appreciate Picasso then I can appreciate and not depricate Rockwell.

J

Different (brush) Strokes for Different Folks

To me Rockwell & Hooper are two terrific artists trying to capture different things with two different painting styles.. :eusa_clap :eusa_clap
