We've had a few post on here about that very coat, as I'm in the market for one, myself. I can tell you that the original is a custom job, so your not going to find one on the general market that has all the details the Perdition coat has...it's going to have to be custom/bespoke, if you want a screen accurate version. I've considered modifying a couple of European military overcoats (one for the main coat, one for extra material) to get something close....Here's some reference images for ya...;)

I mean for the demand - if someone closer than Indy Magnoli could get a few made, I am sure they would sell like hotcakes.

If I had the time and patterns, I would do it myself and sell them all on here.

I see the style coming back, but at extraordinary prices...

Thanks for the tips guys.

I have been Googling my a$$ off trying to locate SOMETHING similar, but have found ZIPPO.

That cut was typical of American overcoats from the 1920s, which are harder to find than '30s ones.

However ... wool German overcoats were made in this style from the '20s to the '60s. Try searching German eBay: ebay.de

Keywords search: "mantel" & "herren"

.

WOW. That is VERY similar.

And of course, it is already sold!

Well our friend Indy Magnoli can and will make the coat to my specs for $750. Shipping included.

So I am going to start a Donny Brasco Road To Perdition fund....

Any takers?

Well I have been speaking o Indy Magnoli of Magnoli Clothiers and he basically said that he CAN make the Road to Perdition coat. His Chicago Coat is similar, but not exact.

For the price of the Chicago Coat, he can make a Road to Perdition coat.

Hmmm..Christmas is coming, maybe I will start dropping lines....?

Guys - I am also serious about that finder's fee on eBay. I just don't have the time working 12 hour days to search for a gem...

PM me.

The Chicago is a beautiful coat, and no offense to Indy (as he is a fine clothier), but the 800 dollar price tag is a little out of the "disposable income" range of the common working stiff (like myself--my wife would kill me lol )....I guess I'll continue to search for a offering that is similar (or, can be altered), yet affordable....;)

My thoughts...

I say if you can get a quality coat for $750-800.....buy it!

A coat like the one Mr. Hanks wore in the movie/photos is long, nearly ankle length. Length equates to fabric yardage...yardage equates to costs. I would order 4 yards of fabric for any coat similar in length.

A quality heavy weight wool, that would be keeping with the period and keeping you warmer, can easily cost $50-100/yard, wholesale. Cashmere is even more costly (some might be available at cheaper prices, but you get what you pay for). Add in the requisite heavy lining, canvas etc...all needing longer lengths as well, and you end up with a very high material costs before labor is added.

The other thought on price is, that you do not buy a topcoat very often, you do not wear it year round, so it doesn't wear out quickly. A top coat is truly a long time investment.

In various ads posted about this sight, you can see the pricing for suits, coats etc. Most are comparable to what was a typical mortgage payment of that period. Keep that in mind...it truly makes it an investment.

Tom,

Great insight! I'll tell the wife that when she stares at me like I'm a nut for wanting to pay this....LOL.

Hmmm...perhaps you can make some coat like this?

Holy Moley!

That's "Worumbo Cloth"! It was VERY expensive in its day. (Oviatt's made overcoats out of the stuff, if that tells you anything.)

Furthermore, Capper & Capper was a very high-end clothing store.

Please, please tell me that a Fedora Lounger bought this overcoat. If not, then what's the use of sharing our hard-earned knowledge on this forum? :(
