Road to Perdition, Tom Hanks Polo Coat - NEED HELP!!!

Hard to see but this is peak lapel DB. A lovely wool/rayon bouclé fabric. Bought from the vintage clothing store that partially outfitted Jude Law for this movie. 1936 union label. it has the cuffs.

There is a coat very similar to the one Hanks is wearing at "you know where" that may or may not be going by the description of "1940'S BLUE W/MAROON WINDOW PANE MOBSTER OVERCOAT". But I didn't say anything.

Swami's right, just about everything in the movie was custom tailored. I own the DVD, there's a long feature on the sets, clothes and cars...they wanted the look of the fabric to be perfect, so they had a mill produce all of the fabric for it. One of the primary issues was the fabric weight, which as I've said elsewhere, is severely lacking in modern clothing.

Thanks for the info I have it too and did not bother to look at the add ons before I lent it to a friend!

Oh man!!!

I got the coat yesterday and against all my expectations this thing fits me great!:D :cool2:

The cut is great and I have problems to explain how nice the fabric is. Let's say that I now know why these coat are said to be bulletproof!;)

I'll just go and take some pictures.

Regards,
Henrik

I know these pics are pretty blurry, but I think you can get the main idea of the fit. It's a bit shorter than the one Tom Hanks wore, but that exactly the lenght I like.

Perdition Coat

It seems to me the way to go with that coat would be to get a navy blue ex-RAF greatcoat and then make some suitable changes/adaptions. That is the weight of the material FWIW

I also have a navy 1950s German military coat. Those coats are nice and look much like the coat in Road to perdition, BUT the quality of 1930s civilian custom overcoat really can't be beat.

The standard overcoat material I use is a 14oz 80% wool/cashmere blend with the typical overcoat flannel feel to it.
I'm sorry to bring up a two month old post but I just want to clarify, do you mean 80% wool, 20% cashmere or 80% wool and cashmere?

Speaking of fabric weights, Magnoli has a couple of pure wools that add I think $100 to a suit, but are probably well worth it. Weights are 11oz and 13oz, which are heavy enough for me personally. You could probably use the overcoatings he has as well at standard price, but he doesn't advise it since they're very thick.

Sorry about the confusion. The overcoat material is 65% wool, 20% synthetic, and 15% cashmere. I do have an Italian material that is 65% wool and 35% cashmere in the same weight and color range, but this would add around $150 to the price of an overcoat.

Kind regards,
Indy

Does anyone have or know where I can find some reference pictures of the coat from different angles? I am thinking about getting one custom made out here in China, but if I do that I really need as many photos as possible to show them exactly what I want.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Ken :)

OK, I need to take a few pics, I scored a "Harris tweed" trenchcoat a few years back. For a change, it is "too big" for me. I've been looking for a wool trenchcoat/greatcoat, but it seems the only way to find one is to have one tailored... I used to have a Finnish navy officer coat that got too small for me; absolutely the best in winter. And the material wasn't substantial at all.

Hello all,

My account has been recently been activated, and I have been lurking around here for many months. Really great styles and people in here. I made the decision to become a member because I am in need of some assistance.

I am having a very difficult time, other than getting a bespoke coat, finding a polo (or wait) coat in black or charcoal. Jos A Bank has almost exactly what I am looking for, however, only in camelhair (tannish orange).

I know Indy Magnoli makes a very nice replica coat, but $750 is a bit pricey and I am sure shipping from the other side of the world can get costly.

I am REALLY hoping that someone can find a link or knows where I can get one of these coats, winter is coming and I think it is time for one.

I am a big fan of the "depression-era" or "prohibition era" clothing styles and this coat will be a great find if someone can point me in the right direction.

Congrats on the great site and keep the suggestions coming.

Donald

I'd say ebay. There are some that pop up every so often. I got a coat very similar to Hanks in RTP, in black minus the cuffs and hip pockets for a little over $30. There are deals to be had. I'd say check eBay everyday and you should fine something you like at some point.

Other than ebay I don't know what else there is without breaking the bank.
