Good hunting sir, I go to Montana for elk in November. Can hardly wait to get out into the high country. Look forward to pictures of the hunt and camp life.

Well I'm back. Started off nice and snowy. Then it warmed up

Didn't see any elk! Oldest son got lucky and snagged a 5 x 5. Even tho it warmed up and the animals stayed way up high, had a great time just being there!!! I'll post more pics shortly. Seems I'm having issues posting more than one at a time

Simply being there made up the price of the elk license. After the past 3 years of being in and out of hospital with wifey, it was a well appreciated getaway!!!!

And so I return form my first elk trip meatless but vastly amused. It was another scintillating hour of the "Jim and Walter in The Woods" comedy hour in which we did everything right but still got it wrong. Who else would complain that after intense scouting, game location and perfect ambush site whereto came a six by seven bull? Unfortunately, we had a cow tag. Six elk did we spot and locate twice over the two day hunt--all bulls from raghorn to the valley's Main Man but nary a cow did we see. The hunter's corollary to Murphy's Law reads, "The animal you see is not the one you have a tag for". Murphy wins again . . .

2013 Montana Bull

Just got back from Southwest Montana near the Ruby River. It was a challenging week with a successful result, a nice public lands bull. Great experience, climbed a lot of mountains and saw some beautiful country. Best hunt in a long time.

No heart or liver, the shot damaged both, it was a hard quarter angle shot, 225 yard with a steep slope. 30-06 180 grain Nosler Partition still packs a wallop even though it is a vintage round. No hang time we quartered it and packed it out.

I should have known that Montana bull would be a field dress packer.
Envious; would like to try a 7mmWby 140g Barnes TSX out in Montana or Idaho.

May visit Wojos today at 99th Pulaski for an Elk burger and dream a bit. :coffee:
