That method will give a result like the picture below. The top fold gives the bow a little more dip in the middle. It's the method I use for making a double bow...

this is a sweet one , i got some material coming from europe i think this is the how i am going for on my relaxed bash, i might do a triple fold on the center part

It happens. I always buy two yards if I'm getting ribbon from a by-the-yard source.

Can someone please fill this space again with a step by step picture tutorial of replacing the band and ribbon on a fedora by stitching? I first saw it on here back in Dec 2017, and once my supplies were delivered the tutorial was gone. The inserted web links don't work either. This would help me out a lot on my DIY project. This "how to" was the only one I found online after days of searching.

Good evening all. I’ll start off by saying I’ve read everything I can find here and on google on replacing a ribbon. I still have a couple questions. I ordered two yards of Cotton/Rayon antique grosgrain ribbon on Etsy from a known and well reviewed seller. It is 2” wide and dark brown. I’ll be doing a what I think is called a boxcar bow. My question is about swirling/stretching the ribbon to account for the taper. My understanding was that you take a steam iron, with something in between and iron the lower third of the ribbon as you pull it through, effectively making the bottom longer than the top so it tapers. But tonight I saw a video where the lady laid the ribbon down and ironed it into a circle? This would make sense for a binding but she also listed it as swirling for a hatband. Any guidance would be welcome. Thank you

Good luck with that, it's not as easy at it seems, but that is probably my take, after all my missus tells me that the acronym DIY in my case, means, Don't Involve Yourself. Probably because I tend to make a pig's ear of things.

But the reason that I have replied is to suggest that you might ask a professional. I did just that, when my wife had a wedding hat made. I spoke to the milliner and she told me to bring the hat and new hatband in. She tied the bow, steamed it onto the hat and now it looks like it did when new. Cost, pro bono. If you have a milliner locally it might be worth checking.

No such luck on a local milliner. And I hate asking for free advice from someone who makes their living doing whatever I’m asking advice on. Time is money for them and I hate to be a bother. As far as difficult, all I can do is screw it up. That’s why I got extra ribbon. I’m a very hands on person, with blacksmithing, woodwork, sewing, mechanics, etc. This is just another skill I hope to at least learn the basics of an add to my tool box.

I bought a Stetson Whippet without the ribbon. I did what you did, I bought the ribbon and followed these instructions. I found them to be the best ones I could find and they worked.

Ironing the ribbon into a circle works well for me.

On an unrelated note. Has anyone heard from kingrat? He used to sell hats on eBay under, "Dazerdog" but I haven't seen that he's been selling anything in quite a while. I tried calling him several times but I think his number is no longer in service. I know he had health issues and I was wondering if he's still alive.
