I re did my thin ribbon panama from Robert.
I replaced the ribbon - [ with the ribbon that came on the hat] , I think it looks great.
What do you think????

Looks good, yes, but a wide ribbon so dark on a such a light hat, to me, always seems to emphasize the ribbon. Probably why I like thin ribbons so much, they seem to balance the look better.

It took me a good long while to get to this point, but I now prefer the basic, moderate width, plain black ribbon on the "real" Panama straws (you know, the Montecristis and Cuencas). It's sorta like a white shirt with a suit. Sure, other colors are often just fine -- or maybe even preferable, under some circumstances -- but still ...

All of these hats are the color that they are.... most are white or what I CALL WHITE.
The ribbon is just what you want, black, brown multi-colored or PURPLE. It depends on what you want.
Even if you hate a red ribbon try not to tell the guy that post his hat with the most "perfect red' ribbon that it looks like crap..

RBH: I would have preferred seeing this hat on yor head instead of your foot... but ok. When in Rome... :)

To me this is a classic panama - Stark white with a black ribbon. The wide brim is down all around to give shade even in the neck area. What's not to like??

Thanks. these hats can be put into many shapes!...
If you can get a couple at a price you like, try some different shapes on the crowns!

I have already experimented some but so far I've found it a bit hard to shape a panama compared to a fur-felt. I guess I need more training. [huh]

To me the straws are easier! You just need to be sure you wet the straw well!!!

Like soaking it? I've only used a spray bottle and misted it myself. :eusa_doh:

But how to get it to stay in position? I heard someone said they used a blowdryer to "freeze" the bash in position... worth a try maybe?

Yes I would tell you I have soaked it. There will be some that would say not to do it that way. But I have done it that like for the last 20 years.
I only wet [soak] the part I wish to shape. [most of the time the crown] This may not be the 'correct' way but I have done it and have had great luck with it!

The way I do it is to put warm water in the sink,, I then put the crown [brim side up] in the water ... I leave it in the water till the crown is full. I then bring the hat up and let the water drain out... I then put the hat on my head... I always have and idea of the shape I want... while the hat is on my head I try and shape it[ most of the time it is a c-crown]...
I truly hope this helps you...
