I've seen a lot of discussion lately from some folks interested in buying a CD about whether to get the Imperial grade or deluxe

I threw a quick video together comparing my CDs ...

I did so because my experience goes against pretty much everything I have read here.

I can obviously only speak on my own experiences and my own hats... and aside from the sweat I prefer the Imperial grade

I also have a deluxe Fed IV which I find similar to the Deluxe CD as far as felt

I hope this helps someone with their decision

Great video, Anthony! It reminds me how old we all are on here that we aren't slappin videos up here all the time. :) Ain't that what the kids are doin' these days?

I have the silverbelly and bluegrass green, both in imperial felt. My bluegrass green is just like yours... soft. But my silverbelly has the "thump" to it yours has. Significantly stiffer than the bluegrass green. It's pounced a bit smoother too. You'd almost wonder if they are the same hat, except that they share the same dimensions. Who knows, maybe I got the deluxe felt with the imperial sweat. I'm sure each batch has slightly different levels of stiffener too, so that my explain it.

I've had the exact same experience with my SBCD and BGGCD. The latter is almost "floppy" compared to the SB.

Yeah Dave
I forgot to mention in the video that it's quite possible that the silverbelly felt for some reason requires a different stiffener formula .
I have felt others silver belly CDs that were also stiff.
....but the felt on my deluxe FedIV is similar to the silverbelly felt in the vid.
And to my hand they just feel thicker and heavier.

They are beautiful hats... Don't get me wrong.
... But I ultimately prefer a hat that when poked the dent stays... If ya know what I'm sayin

And again... They could all be different
I'm only going by hats I own and a few others that I have felt

Great vid, Anthony. Should help anyone contemplating which way to go on these. My experience echos yours. To add to this I recently got a "mid brown" imperial grade Camp Draft from gtdean which is by far the stiffest of the bunch

Thanks for the great video, Anthony. Judging by that, and by other comments here of people with different experiences, it sort of seems like Akubra felt quality is a crap shoot. I've been focusing on a Fed IV for my next purchase. I think I'll go with the cheaper model and hope for the best.

Great video Anthony! We more videos like that. I have only only one heritage and I bought it for the color. I really like my imperials better as far as handleability (is that a word?)

How about a quick video trying on the hats and wearing them. I'd like to take a look at the Bluegrass Green and the Fawn on the head for comparison. Pictures are one thing but I prefer the video perspective better.

The Squatter I had, in the Imperial felt, was stiff and rough to the touch.

I could definitely do that later if you would like

Great vid, thanks for taking the time. It will be of great use to someone umming and ahhing over which to buy.
I've got CD's and Feds in deluxe felt and they are all different. My Moonstone Fed is the softest of them all, despite not being the most worn, while my black Fed feels like it's made of cardboard! Everything else is in-between.
As you say they are great hats though.:)
