Questions on New Leather Jackets

Hello all,

I'm extremely new to leather jackets. I've just ordered my first(https://www.schottnyc.com/products/express-mens-leather-motorcycle-jacket.htm#tab-overview), the Schott 508. My understanding is that it is a Wax based, pull up leather. I understand what all of that means in the context of footwear and belts, but I've never owned a product with that kind of leather. Since I'm rather new to the jacket game, I was wondering what kind of maintenance is required. I'm used to conditioning leather boots with mink oil as soon as I buy them, but this leather seems like it may have a different procedure. I was wondering if anyone had any tips for this kind of leather and leather jackets in general.

I'm very new to Fedora Lounge so please excuse me if this isn't the right place to ask. I'm also a little overloaded on the layout of this site so if there's a better place to post, please let me know. I also don't have the jacket on hand as it's still in delivery so unfortunately no product/pics on hand. Thanks guys.

If it's a waxy pull up it's already infused or finished with waxes and possibly fats. No extra lotions or oils needed. Certainly not mink oil. You'll find that many here don't see a need to slap on extra treatments to most new leather jackets. Maybe years down the road if the leather seems dry.

Maybe if you're going to be putting your jacket through some really harsh conditions, like working in it all day, rain, sun or snow, then you'd want to condition it once in a while and even that's usually done on a yearly basis but a brand new jacket, fresh out of the box doesn't require any treatment for years.

Awesome, good to know! just curious, down the road, what would you recommend to keep the leather from drying out? My first assumption would be Otter Wax leather oil as it seems to be one of the few products that Schott sells online.

A lot of folks around here, including me, really like Pecards Leather Dressing. It is a very mild leather preservative and it is not likely to damage the jacket or the stitching the way that some other products can. Use the search function and you will find that many threads have been written regarding the various leather treatment products available. You will also find many different opinions but Pecards is usually a crowd favorite.

Welcome, and congrats on the purchase. Don't worry, being on this site you will Never be tempted to purchase another leather jacket. The Schott you purchased will not require any treatment for a substantial amount of time. These should not be needed in the first 4-6 years unless you are literally living in that new Schott.

I also received a Urad leaflet from Dena. Is it a real deal? Obenauf's has been my favorite. To the OP - I use these treatments on jackets that are 60 years old and likely never been treated. A new wax-stuffed hide will likely not need any treatment for a decade or more.

Don't think of leather jackets as leather shoes and boots. The amount of conditioning and care they need is several magnitudes less than boots/shoes. At some point you may need to treat the leather, but that won't be for quite some time.

IMO, the only thing you should do regularly is wipe the back of the neck and the inside of the wrists (if they are leather lined) with a damp cloth every couple weeks, especially in summer. I have seen enough jackets with damage in these areas to be afraid of skin oils/sweat attacking leather.
Other than that your jacket should be carefree for the first 10 or 20 years.

Things are different if you are very rough on your jacket, ie riding thousands of miles in the rain and sun yearly, but if it's just a casual jacket, you don't need to do much.

I agree with @Carlos840, but would go further and recommend a once yearly treatment of the inside collar area with leather conditioner for those jackets that are heavily worn. While there are many good conditioners available, many on here favor Pecard. I have tried most of the conditioners recommended here and like most of them—with the exception of Obenauf. I use it on my boots, but not leather jackets.
