Questions About the United States Navy Peacoat

Things are going well here, thank you.

I think I remember when you got the CG coat years ago. If I remember correctly, the CG tags are identical to the Navy tags. At least the ones I have seen are identical.

For reference:
2 different labels, 2 different CG peacoats.
Also, i believe i have seen somewhere labels for CG peacoats that have Coast Guard included on the label as opposed to Navy.
I’m thinking maybe it was on more modern versions. Idk

The first tag is a 1959 tag. This tag was used from 1956 to 1965, if my memory is correct. It is my favorite peacoat tag.

The second tag is a 1949 tag.

The CG tags say " US Coast Guard" w/ name and rate under that. I just emailed a photo of a CG tag to Peacoat.

Don't recall seeing one with CG on the tag, but that doesn't mean they don't exist. I just don't remember.

Peacoat - I emailed you a photo of a CG tag. I also bought a CG coat quite a few years ago. It had the same tag. I bought it for either my son or my wife. Since there was no interest in it , I resold it on ebay I have found it pretty hard to interest other people in the Peacoat bug. Lets see - there is my wife, my older son, my younger son, my step daughter, and my step son.

Do you want it measured down along the curve of the elbow or straight down from the shoulder seam?

And here is the image of the Coast Guard tag emailed me by Spoon. It is a 1947 tag, or perhaps a 1946 tag. For a tag that is 77 years old, I think hitting the date within a year or two is accurate enough.

Obviously, this tag does show that is a CG peacoat.

I'm looking for the mil-spec length, including (now that you mention it) the mil-spec for how to measure that length, whether the elbow method or otherwise.

Not sure that I can help you unless you tell me how you want it measured. And I don't know that there is a "mil-spec" method for measuring sleeve length.

Makes no difference now that you have sold it, but if it was the exact same tag, it, too, was a 1947 coat.

OK, so I can only have 1 number (measurement), and I must pick only from those 2 choices, and only using the words from those 2 choices even if 1 of them is mil-spec? I'll take "straight" for $500, Alex.

Thank you, now that I unambiguously have selected "straight," purpose would be yet another criterion to add to the list, but, fortunately, purpose is often not germane to answer simple questions.

MIL-C-16290 100%-melton (shell) peacoat?

Without "mil-spec" and the "mil-spec" for how to measure "mil-spec," there is basically no inspection and no "out of spec."

It's surprising that the famous peacoat lacks easily accessible documentation when compared to other items.

Navy men, Army is winning the documentation war. If you were to let Army beat you in history, you might wake to find this thread re-named, "The Navy's Mackinaw."

Thinking about getting a vintage Navy pea coat. I am 5’6’’, 165-170 lbs, with a 40 inch chest. I am on the leaner side of things. A 40 measured around 42 in the chest on most jackets. Is that typical? Would a 40R be too long? I wear 40s in sport coats.
