Purchase Vintage vs. New, and all the above

After reading through some older posts as well as more recent, I thought it would be nice to see where we stand on purchasing the majority of our suits/dresses/accessories, etc.

1. Vintage Only = aged clothing, probably used or NOS.
2. Thrift Store Finds = could be old or new, you're looking for style
3. Touch of Vintage = Modern clothes, modern suits, but vintage or vintage-themed accessories.
4. New/Modern Only = modern styles

I'm somewhere in between a 2 and 3.

I'm a 48-50L, 17.5x37 shirt, 7 5/8 hat, and size 14 D shoe- it's hard finding anything even relatively vintage. :eusa_doh:

I'm firmly a 3. My latest vintage purchase was my wedding ring set - I found a beautiful set from the late '40s that I just adore.

I am for sure a # 3. 90% of what I wear is used (thrift store finds) modern, but stuff like my watch and Ties are all vintage, all the time.

I tend to be the same. It's hard enough to find vintage in New Mexico to begin with, so finding suits in my small size is near impossible.

You need to add at least 2 more categories. I can't answer this as I wear a mix of vintage clothing and new stuff that I buy or make. I have a lot of original vintage but I can't wear it all the time because want it to last! You'll find a lot people here do the same. You need

- Good mix of both vintage and new vintage feel
- Sew own from vintage patterns

I chose #1, but it's stretching a point. My undergarments are modern, as are most of my shoes, socks and dress shirts (though with all three, I buy with an eye for that vintage flair). I don't own any vintage belts.

My casual shirts are all vintage, my trousers are 90% vintage, all my suits and sports coats are vintage, and 99% of my ties are vintage.

Only one of my hats is vintage, alas, due to my large head.

Oh, and my sock garters are modern, but I think merely wearing sock garters makes a sufficiently strong vintage statement.

Where I currently stand is probably the "Touch of Vintage." All of my clothing is modern, albeit pretty conservative and traditional anyway. Probably the two most "vintage" accessories I own are my B-15 cotton jacket (a supposed 1953 reproduction), and my Akubra Federation IV (supposedly a 1930s reproduction hat, but inspired by Harrison Ford's Indiana Jones fedora).

#2 all the way, except socks, underwear, and athletic shoes. I thrift suits, shirts, pants and shorts, and dress shoes. I haven't bought a new suit in a store since 2002.

My average suit cost $11
My average shirt, $3
My average dress shoes, $6
My ties are normally $1-$2

I never cease to be amazed at the number of 18 inch neck, 35 inch sleeve dress shirts in good shape in thrift stores. I saw a 20/37 shirt today, that must have been a big boy wearing that one.

I saw a pair of Nike Air today at a Goodwill in size 21!! They had to sit on the shelf sideways and end-to-end.

I'm probably touch of vintage, but that's mainly because it's easier to find accessories in good repair than clothes in good repair that fit my style, body and budget. I'm working on learning to sew...I want to be able to make clothes from vintage patterns. I'm just starting to research sewing machines, so it will be a while yet.

I'm a sucker for vintage compacts, coats and handbags.

I find thrift stores interesting. If they don't have what I am looking for, I'll go to the department store and hope to find something with a bit of a vintage look.
