Pulled the trigger langlitz columbia

Well, i finally talked to scott at langlitz about my custom columbia order. Im doing the padded pocket columbia in medium cowhide with several pockets deleted. Im deleting the arm pockets and the watch pocket on the front to clean things up. Im also going to have them use a tan thread for the contrast stitching on everything to make it really pop.

As far as the leather goes, id really like to order their goat, but im just so torn with it. I have a cow vanson in comp weight and scott says their med weight cow is close. I could probably talked into the goat, but i just dont know. Ive heard the goat can flap in the wind. I like that the goat feels broken in but id like some structure as well.

Their medium cowhide is great, and lasts forever. You should not be disappointed! I've not owned a Langlitz "goat" but friends' that I've tried on seem to feel heavy.

I really want to see some macro closeup on the goat. I have handled some truly tough goat leather, feel like armor to the hand. I currently have a beat up MC jacket of unknown brand, probably from the 90s, nothing special, but the goat is just outstanding. It’s a man’s jacket, 24” back, doesn’t fit me length-wise, crappy lining, but I love the shell.

Just received some leather sample from Langlitz. Did you guys realize the medium cowhide is possibly two layers glued together? A bit like the felt sandwiched Schott horsehide.

Now I’ve handled the goat, I think gonna stick to the horse or the cowhide.

Regius,
I just checked both of my Langlitz jackets made from medium weight cowhide and I’m very happy to say they are not two pieces of leather sandwiched together. I agree that the photo you posted of your sample looks very much that way, and I wonder what the deal is.
That horsehide looks great by the way, if I were in the process of ordering a jacket from them I might be tempted to go with it even despite $1200 price tag increase.

My medium cowhide is great. Nothing like the sandwich photo.
I was also not impressed with the goat but have never been a fan of any goat. Except goat roti- YUMMY
That horsehide is impressive! I have a sample and believe a jacket made of it would end all this jacket chasing forever!!!!

Yes it is!
I thought that was pretty nuts when I heard about it, but seeing that sample makes me think that I’d like to have a jacket in that leather. Fortunately I am not looking to order anything from Langlitz anytime soon so I can resist the temptation for now.

Not being real computer savvy, I'm not sure to who or how to reply to my received messages, but, '80s Ross Langlitz era medium cowhide was the best, most comfortable and best aging leather that i've ever had in a jacket. There are few that I've not owned in more years than I want to admit. Horse hide is great if you start off with one 1/2 Century old that has been loved and cared for. Happen to have an early Buco J-24 Sz 46 that will shame about anything out there. It is a size too small for me but one with deep pockets can own probably the Very Best in a horse hide jacket.

So, this horsehide actually didn’t impress me at all, don’t mean to sound snobbish but in glaze & suppleness, it’s just like the Eastman Luftwaffe HH, & very similar to the Schott HH (sourced from Italy in both cases). But without the Schott chemical smell, maybe it’s because it’s a sample. It’s strong for sure, & by no means bad,but I think I prefer Horween. This is great, would love a jacket made from it but horween is a league to its own.

The sandwich effect, I noticed it as I can actually separate the layers.

Hey Regius, how does the thickness of the horsehide compare to the lightweight cow? Did they say the weight of the horsehide? If possible, could you share a thickness photo of both? Thanks.

I have to agree...none of those leathers look terribly interesting to me.

The thickness of the horsehide vs the medium cowhide can be seen in this photo. Now, they are not of the same thickness, & Langlitz doesn’t claim they are. I’ll get a macro lens tomorrow so I can take better close up shots.

The horsehide is much more pliable & creases easily. I am convinced it’s sourced from the same tannery as the Eastman Luftwaffe
