Looks like its basically a raw edge that has been finished off(sanded) rather than a simple cut. No curl, no binding, no sharp edge. Probably slight upward finish to very extremity of edge with iron.

Yes, I guess the edge on the Nutria has been sanded... it is very thin - I will take some close-up photos later and add. Thanks for collecting these photos of the 3X. They were posted to the classifieds during the auction, but seem to be gone now.

I worked on the hat this morning. Trying to steam and brush on the Garvé was a challenge. The felt molds into the gap in the two halves like a wet t-shirt. Most clay-like felt that I have handled.

Alan, impressive Nutria Stetson, my Congrats to that old sweety! I see you have the right nose for these finds!

Thanks Manfred... My nose is pretty good but sometimes I get help! ;)

Phenomenal, Alan!!! :eusa_clap:eusa_clap:eusa_clap

The liner and sweatband are spectacular on this hat. I do love the vintage Nutria felt. It pounces nicely, but is super durable. I wonder if the "Tailored Edge" had to do with extra care dedicated to the raw edge. The raw edge on this hat has a rounder/more refined appearance than a standard raw edge. I've seen so many vintage raw edges that look as if the brim was cut and the hat was shipped. Many times a raw edge will have a very "square" cut due to the way a rounding jack will cut the felt. This Nutria looks like the edge was sanded after it was cut and therefore its been "tailored." [huh]

Thanks Josh. I'm not sure how much longer Stetson continued the Clear Nutria quality level in their line but if there was a change in the works perhaps it explains the mismatch of trademarks on sweatband and liner.

You are right on the money about the brim edge... below is a picture I took today contrasted with a photo added by Robert that shows the contrast between the two.

Brown Clear Nutria

Quite massive, 7" crown, 5" brim.... no store name imprint on the sweatband. Very furry and soft. The durable nutria felt is in excellent condition despite some moth activity. The ribbon and bow and sweatband are also in good shape. Not sure what has befallen the edge binding? Sweatband Lot 5XXX.
