Sorry that this isn't a jacket pic, but I wasn't sure where else on The Fedora Lounge to post it. I received this "Duty and Tax Invoice" from FedEx and was wondering what you all think of it. It's in regards to my new Thedi jacket, but I've never received anything like it before for any overseas purchase. The way I see it, I purchased the jacket and FedEx delivered it to my doorstep, so the transaction is over. I assume Theodoros paid what he needed to pay to get it to me, so what is FedEx on about? At first I thought it was a scam, but now I don't think so. Have any of you received something similar after purchasing a Thedi jacket or anything else from overseas? I hate to be cheap, but $114 seems like a steep price to pay nowadays when you're not expecting it.

I appreciate any input you guys might have.

I’ve never gotten this via postage. It usually comes to me via text or email. Just look up the tracking number online to see if it has any fees.. there probably is tax. I had to pay tax for my thedi’s.

I've had to call brokers and dispute charges like this before. If there is no indication of duties/CoD to pay on the tracking info or when they deliver the package then my stance is the transaction is complete when the delivery is completed. I've had brokers come looking for duties after the fact before and I called to get them waived (although not to this same amount). It's like the grocery store calling you up to say they need to charge more for the bread you just bought yesterday.

Totally normal. You pay an import duty on goods you buy from out of the country that are over $800.

4203.10.40 - Articles of apparel and clothing accessories, of leather or of composition leather: Other, coats and jackets. -6%

They also charge the additional processing fee.

It is way worse in other countries...

I got a letter like that the other day. Import from UK to EU with fedex. FedEx seems to demand it afterwards, DHL before delivery. You can no longer avoid paying.

You may be able to dispute the fee but certainly not the duties themselves. These are state-imposed with FedEx merely collecting them.

As for the fees; I guess FedEx was correct in assuming you would want them to handle the import?!
Over here, before the big courier firms started to make money out of customs-brokerage, they would actually deliver not to your doorstep but to the regional customs office. You then needed to go there and do a manual customs declaration. Total nuisance!

Yes, this is my experience too.

Technically, if somebody handles an import on my behalf and requests fees, I’d like to be asked first.
All in all, I’d like to get my orders as quickly as possible, so I don’t mind the FedEx way. Just get me my stuff, and we’ll handle the paperwork later. ;)

Just consider yourselves lucky there in the US.
For a similarly priced jacket coming out of the EU (~1500e) we would have to pay around 400e in import and VAT duties here, roughly 4 times more.

I remember when the banks were worried about being robbed. Now they, with their buddies in the government, are the robbers. Here we have petrol excises, stamp duties, GST (a form of VAT), land tax, Council rates, capital gains tax, you name it. Over-governed and over-taxed. But nobody ever does anything about it, they just vote for the same old scumbags.
