Adam Blue Beater

Couldn't let this lie at an estate sale this afternoon. Too large for me, but surely one of you gents with substantial melons will want to give it a home:

Old, dusty, moth-bitten Adam Long Premier. It's HUGE!!!! Size 7 1/2!

After a bit of a brush and a pass through the steamer it looked like this:

5 1/2" crown, 2 3/4" bound brim, 5/8" binding, 1 3/4" unreeded sweat. Sweat's in perfect shape, still firmly attached to the hat. Several moth bites, with the largest crater right on the front of the brim on the top side. (Wouldn't you know!) Felt's soft and malleable.

Anyway, it's a grand old hat that needed to escape that tool shed where it's languished for who knows how may decades. I'll put it in the Classifieds for adoption.

Picked up this Stetson 3X Western on the 'Bay for a BIN of $55. It looked to be in fantastic shape, and it is. Since I favor the outback look for my outdoors lids, as opposed to cowboy style, I took out the steamer.

Looks like pretty much what I want to do with this Smithbilt with the 6" crown on it. This isn't a soft hat though, the brim is just about bullet-proof lol

Your 3X looks great. Stetsons from the 'embroidered liner era' had awesome felt quality, no?

Recently I noticed that one of the new vendors where I do my caricatures in the evenings is a young-ish fella' who wears flat caps and vintage jackets from time to time so I asked him what hat size he wears (7-3/8). Turns out I had a nice, vintage Herbert Johnson cap in that size that I had bought for $3 so I brought it to the next gig, but he didn't know that. That night, he swings over to my booth with a big Dobbs felt hat and says, "This is too small for me, you can have it." So I laid the cap on him and he flipped. It was a perfect swap.

The Dobbs was in real need of shaping and I sort of did a Jimmy on it. It's not perfect but has no moth damage. It's dress weight felt but with Western proportions. It has, however, the fancier ribbon with the shorter tails on the bow which I would expect on an Open Road style hat. Raw edged brim though. [huh]

This first shot shows the color correctly. It's not silverbelly. It's almost a perfect color match for my 7X Clear Beaver with that yellowish tint to it. I'm really liking this Western style hat.

Thanks! This one didn't even have any brim edge binding for me to cut away. Kinda' took the fun out of it, y'know!?

You're a lucky cuss Gene,....out of all my hats there are only a few that look good on my old head,.....you on the other hand, have the unique ability to make ANY hat look great!

I am going to have to get brave and learn how to crease my western like that.It's not as nice a hat as that by any stretch and really needs softening but that crease would make it much more enjoyable for sure.
I love the band on that one but the croen on mine is so high I think I'll try yo find something much wider but still suitable.
Just to add to what all the others said: Beautiful hat!!

I know I'm pleased with my OR clones and that certainly looks like it's a nice one. That ribbon looks familiar!

Looks very similar to the Bradford, I posted a few months, ago.
