I have mixed emotions about this one.
It seems like a good hat ... great feel to the finish and a welted edge (the first I have ever had that fits). And despite my poor pics, it's exactly the shade of grey I was looking for.
BUT it's brim is a bit stingy. Around 2" instead of the 2.5 claimed in the auction.

I've already removed that giant ribbon and flattened the brim's upturn a bit ... a thinner ribbon and it might just be a winner.

I found this hat yesterday at Salvation Army. I am hoping to gain some more info on it (age and anything else) so I can list it properly. Also there are some spots here and there I was wondering if anyone had any advice on removing these or if that was even possible.

My new Royal Stetson - BINed on ebay for 15 GBP - turns out it does not have a liner - but the felt is very thin and the colour light so it will be a good summer hat.
No idea about age though - anyone know anything about the shop?

Beautiful hat. I haven't heard of the shop, but 200 N B'Way is walking distance - I'll send you a pic of the current building, so you can see where your hat was 'born'.

When it comes to cleaning spots from a hat, there are no guarantees that anything will work. However, I have had some success with removing spots like that, by using a little soap on a cold wet wash-cloth (white or a color similar to the straw). With your finger in the cloth, work on the spot, then rinse the cloth out with cold water, and go over the spot to remove the soap. It might just do the trick. :)

Here is another tip = http://www.villagehatshop.com/cleaning-straw.html
I've also heard to use a mixture of 1/2 hydrogen peroxide & 1/2 warm water with a soft cloth. I have also heard to use a damp cloth & use get only the suds formed by a mild detergent in warm water & wipe with that. HTH

I'd be careful with hydrogen peroxide. It could bleach the straw and leave a spot that is lighter than the rest of the hat.

I once spilled some hydrogen peroxide on a black jeans and ended up with white stains :eusa_doh:

Thanks Lefty - I meant based on how ugly the pictures looked. The ugly pics really put me off bidding on his other two hats, but now I wish I would have. I think this Resistol was probably in fantastic shape, just dusty:

Both need a good cleaning, I just brushed them.

Man, I'm glad that auction turned out good for you - those are both very nice. I had a feeling they would all be beaters, so I'm glad I was wrong.

It was a very pleasant shock that they were this nice. Size was true on both. I bid on your Portis as well, but like you was afraid to go very high(less than you) for fear of a wreck.

As to the Resistol, I don't know how long that model was around, but I can say that it was around in 1948.
