Bob -- In response to your question about the Strat's age, here's what I just posted in the Stratoliner Society thread...

That's a nice one, Lefty -- you are hereby issued a temporary membership. :)

What really interests me about your post, however, is that it helps to zero in on a timeframe for lids with the same characteristics. For example, I have a Royal Stetson that is an OR clone with the same sweat, liner and size tag. Based on a number of factors, I have always linked those elements to the early 60's. What's great about your lid is that it has a price tag for $11.95 attached, which, I think, is very consistent with the early 60's timeframe.

Cheers,
JtL

Thanks, Jim. I read your post over there too. Man, how often do you run across an open crown strat in that kind of shape?

Hatsquad, Beautiful colour and looks great on you.
Lefty, that's absolutely mint. My size too... ;)
These Stratoliners suddenly are turning up more often! Hope that bodes well.

StylinLA, love the Vintage Silhouettes... Art's keeping up his high standards.

Lefty, that Stratoliner is wonderful, and just my size! Is your inbox full, yet? ;) That shouldn't hang around too long. I'll keep my eyes open.

The crowd is certainly gathering. I've got to figure out a fair price for both the buyer and for me, and I've got to find the right size box to fit the Strat in its original box - which is not that cool, silver, oval box, but a regular, tan, square, Stetson box with insert. It will go up this week.

I'll give it a shot, but I'm not much for swimming with sharks. Doesn't make it any less of a neat hat, though, and whoever ends up with it will be very fortunate.

How about a Montecristi?

Went antiquing today to find a box for a Mallory I won on ebay. First find of the day was a Dobbs in the box, deadstock. Then a couple of stores later I found this. I started a thread on it because I thought it might be fake, but Art gave it a thumbs up. So here it is:

I'll get a picture of me wearing it here shortly. I may end up sending this one back and waiting for the Fed 4 in my size to come in in April. I guess I've just gotten used to that high crown look. [huh]

DIY's and a VS

I have not posted in a while although I have been reading and availing myself of the collective knowledge available here. I've been on sort of a binge buying some OFAS hats and working on some DIY hats. So, gentlemen, I submit for your criticisim, hopefully constructive, the results of my bingeing

A thrift store find. Dark green velour, German made ?

A Hatco DIY project. This came to me in an 8x8x8 box. It had a "rope" of pheasant feathers for a hatband and the sweatband was all crumbly. I also washed out the lining. I bought this to be the "practice hat" and try my hand at some repairs.

And now the "game hat" . This is a Shudde Bros. custom I assume. It had a cattleman's crease and a little bit of taper in the crown. I replaced the lining, sweatband, ribbon, cut down and dimensionalized the brim to 2 3/4 and 3 , and did my best at trying to take out the taper in the crown

Tips and advice are solicited because I currently have a Resistol western conversion , a straw western conversion , and a couple of Cavanaughs that I won on OFAS that look like they will probably need some work.

My New Lee

Nice Fed Nick.

My new Lee (purchase from OFAS) arrived today. It's a nice dark tan/light brown in colour. The felt is stiff yet soft (if that makes sense?).
Very happy with it.
Anyone have any idea of what model/year this is?
