My wife and I are spending a lot of time driving or riding our scooter around local townships. Without traveling any further than 45 minutes from home, we're finding all sorts of interesting places. Today, we were in Copley Township, only about 20 minutes from home, and stopped at the 2 antique shops in town. Between the two shops, there were two men's hats, one of which was a mail carrier's cap in size 6 3/4. I picked up the other one, a Stetson Casual, for $15 plus tax. It's not in tip top shape but, for the price, it was a deal.

The liner was barely hanging on by a stitch, so I just took it out. I've tried brushing the hat, but that ring from storage won't come out. The sweat is coming a bit apart from the hat in the front as well. I'm thinking of sending this one off to Optimo with my other two finds, but I've got two questions. First, will that storage ring come out? Second, The separation of the sweat from the hat is minimal, so do you think that it will survive a clean and block, or will a new sweat be necessary? Of course, I'd like to keep the original in there.

Lefty, that is a great find!!! :eusa_clap :eusa_clap :eusa_clap I think that's a pretty rare score, and the price is ridiculously right! Love the ribbon on the crown.

As far as the sweat surviving the clean and block -- I sent a couple of Whippets over to Optimo that had sweats that looked to be in about the same condition and they came out just fine. I'm not sure that the looseness in the front of the sweat will affect things in a negative way. That being said, when you send it off to Optimo, just include a note that expresses your concerns, and ask that Graham give you a call before any clean and block occurs. He'll give you his opinion so that you can factor that into your decision before you give the final go-ahead. (I've done this exact same thing, with good result).

Good luck -- please show us some post-Optimo photos, if you decide to go that route.

Thanks JtL. I was looking at the ads for it as soon as I got home. They all seem to be from 46 or 47, but that red liner makes me think that mine is a bit later.

Well knock me over with a feather.

My neighbors, inveterate thrifters and yard salers, have a small yard sale of their own going today. I happened to glance up from my basement window and what did I see but two hats on a table. So I hustled outside and ended up buying both for $2/ea (that's $4 total for the math impaired).

The treasure is this Shudde Brothers OR-style 'Custom Made' (so stated on both the liner and the sweat) in glistening white (is it silverbelly?). Size 7 1/2, it fits my 7 3/8 noggin fine. There is one significant divot by the bow with some moth grazing here and there, although nothing you'd notice casually. Flipping back the sweat (which is in excellent shape) reveals a Shuddle Brothers sticker that says 'MTO' (one assumes 'made to order) with a date of 9-28-66. Oh, and the wind trolley is a fake.

My inclination is to leave the cattleman's crease and flip down the brim, but I might sneak the dents forward over time. Great for daily beater wear.

What do we know of Shudde Brothers Houston? I did a search and saw a couple of hats here and there, but found no information of significance.

The other hat is a Champ with a raw rolled brim, like a homburg but a raw edge. There is some moth damage, but it's wearable. Size 7 and in Champ box. I'd be glad to ship to anyone interested for the price of postage.

Champ now spoken for

^Yeah, sorry. I hadn't actually posted the pic yet. I just took one, though.

The hat and box are both Champ, but the box originally had a black 7 3/8 hat in it. *sigh* That's my size, of course, but now there's the size 7. Oh well.

Again, if anyone wants this one just let me know. You can have it and the box (box is somewhat battered) for shipping + the $2 I paid for it, so maybe $15 or so. It's a neat hat.

Stetson apparently used the "Casual" name on at least one other style. I happen to have a so-named lid that differs significantly from Lefty's recent acquisition and the hat depicted in that old advertisement. Mine has an overwelted edge and a wider ribbon -- a two-tone number, with different colors on its front and back surfaces. It's folded over at the sides of the crown, to show that color difference. It has no bow. (My powers of description are failing me, I suspect. Perhaps a photo is in order?)
Nice enough lid, and its name fits its look.

.

Well, the catteman's crease didn't last long. Ghosting of the old bash remains but it ought to be fine.

Alan, Shudde Bros. is one of the more famous hatters in the 40s-50s out of houston. I once owned a hat that had "Gene Autry" stamped in it as the name and I had doubts so I researched it through Shudde. I was able to talk to the "old man Shudde", and with his help was able to positively identify the hat as indeed belonging to Mr. Autry. It turns out that Shudde Bros did all of the renovation work for him as well as made his hats. No matter where he was playing in the country, he alsways sent his hats to Houston. This was in the mid '90s and would be surprised if Mr. Shudde was still with us but was a very interesting and entertaining gent.

My new Fifth Avenue Milan!

I decided I needed one more straw to get me through the rest of the season. I decided on this Fifth Avenue Milan by Pinzano. And, it's always nice to see Richard at The Brim And Crown.
