Yes, I saw the size was small for me and I've been crying about it all morning :(

I have been trying to gently motivate Phil @hambone71 into his first bowler. All I can say, Phil, is if I could only have one bowler, this would be the one!

Maybe I'm being too subtle; PHIL, talk to Stefan ASAP! Get this bowler!!!!!!
I'm hearing you guys but I'm A 57 as well. Looks like a size too small. Am I missing something about the size?

OH. MY. MY!!! This gal is the prettiest thing I’ve ever seen!!! The color of the felt and trim ribbon is heavenly!! Even the sun beam this morning agrees!!
By a lot, this is my favorite hat! Haven’t done anything to it except dry hand crease.
I may end up evening out the pinches with a little bit of steam, but the diamond bash is perfect!!! $220 for hat and box very, very well spent!! Hats like these are what keep us all in this game!
2 3/4” brim. Was listed as 2 5/8. I had figured and hoped it wider when I seen the eBay pics.
If I were to spec out a custom from a famous boutique hatter I would hope for it to look just like this old Mallory!
The felt color is, actually this one time, best represented by the hat sitting on the box.

Stetson 3X Beaver Quality Western - Pecan
6 inch crown open (about 5 1/2 as shaped)
3 1/2 raw edge brim
5/8 braid fabric hat band
Embroidered Last Drop Liner

My guiding wisdom with this hat.. is that I just could not pass up a 1950s 3X western in such a beautiful pecan color for under $20.. be it a size or two too large… or about 5 sizes too small. This hat was sold as a 6 1/4, I assume due to the number 6 written in pencil on the back of the 1/4 size tag. I suspected by the proportions in the photos and the percentage odds more than likely this would come in at 7 1/4 (I believe a 6 1/4 hat of this quality would probably be about as rare as a 7 3/4… even if far less desirable). So I had to take a swing either way… at 7 1/4 it sits in the outside range of what I can pull off reasonably well and at 6 1/4 it makes a nice conversation piece (or maybe to hold for a future grandchild?). I’m happy to report it is in fact a 7 1/4…. And even though this is one big hat in it’s proportions I have been happily wearing it out and about for the past couple days. I wouldn’t want to wear it on a windy day without a bit of padding to tighten the fit a bit… but otherwise it fits fairly well… doesn’t slop around really at all.

I absolutely love the pecan color of the felt… the unusual braided fabric hat band that is stitched in place and the embroidered last drop liner. The hat is just about pristine outside a small red stain under the brim.. that looks like maybe lipstick. I don’t think the hat has ever had any side dents or pinch just this center dent… but I think it really works. The stars in the sweat logo often points to late 40s to early 50s. I think this size tag more early to mid 50s… and the manufacturer tag also.. I believe 1950s…. Leaves me to estimate early to mid 1950s dating.

Good golly!!
Even the loud Dolphinry doesn’t take anything away from that sweet western lid!
What a hat! Love that band, too!!
And the price makes it even a bigger winner.
Congrats, Joe!

Great get! Happy for you that it turned out to be a 7 1/4 (but bummer for future grandchild :)).

Sometimes it is hard to get excited about the next old hat we find. But, sometimes those happy accidents occur that make it all worthwhile. Several weeks ago, and for no other reason than it was Oktoberfest season, if you will, I did a quick search on Tyrolian hats. Assuming I would get thousands of pages of hits for bright green wool costume hats, I was surprised when the very first listing was what appeared to be a very nice, fedora-styled hat (with all the typical Bavarian accoutrements - a rope band, various pins, and the distinctive brush or gamsbart). When I clicked the link, I was then shocked to find this was a Mac Lachlan hat. Wow is right! Once the initial shock wore off, I made an offer and the seller accepted. While a specialty hat, no doubt, I am very pleased with this find.

These photos are of the hat straight out of the box (with a couple from the seller). The hat needs a good cleaning, but I wanted to get this one posted as soon as I could.

Crown, 5 1/4 open.
Brim, 2 1/4 overwelt. The twin cord, rope band makes it look more narrow than it actually is. Based on the sellers pictures, I was convinced that it would be a 2 inch brim.

The felt is rough in comparison to the smooth finish most of us are accustomed to with vintage hats. It is, however, good quality and consistent with the Tyrolian style hat, in my opinion. This hat has much more taper than usually suits me, but with the higher crown and shallow crease, I have no issues with the hat riding the top of my head. The color is sage (or moss) - middle green with grey/brown undertones. Max has/had a Mac Lachlan fedora that appears similar in color. The hat has no construction issues or damage I can find.

Dating: The hat has a UHC & MWIU label (post 1934) and the Tom Bass Men's Shop ceased operations in 1983. If anyone can narrow that window based on the logo, size tag, or sweat bow, please let me know.

Enjoy. I know I will!
