Mac Lachlan Beaver 15

Mac Lachlan Beaver 15 - Light Silver
5 inch center dent crown - 5 1/2 Open
2 7/8 brim with Cavanagh edge
2 inch Black grosgrain ribbon

It is not hard to see past the moderate mothing on this Mac Lachlan Beaver 15 to see that is was one BEAUTIFUL hat... and really still is. The hand of the felt feels fantastic and it shapes with ease. The brim is a full 2 7/8 with a gorgeous Cavanagh edge. The look and feel of this hat make it hard for me to fathom what the quality would be like on their Fifty Silver Beaver or Max’s grail Golden Beaver 100. Aside from the moth nibbles... none of which go all the way through the felt. It just needed a good brushing that released a good half century or more of dust.. and it really sprung to life. The beautiful brown sweat features the iconic Mac Lachlan Air-Vac Cooling and Cushion system.

Echter Borsalino "Qualità Superiore" "Amiata" "C. Nero" "Gorasti", Size Tag Missing / measures 58cm, possibly late 1930s. This is the first hat of a 9 hat find that took 2 1/2 months to arrive from Germany. The Smooth Finish Felt is of a lighter weight and easily dry creases. There is non elastic Wind Cord which is the type you find in this time period and prior. The gray sweatband has a specialty finish I do not believe I have encountered before. This hat was most likely sold in Eger / Cheb Czechoslovakia (prior to WWI Austria Hungary).

J. Hückel´s Söhne "Jota" "Seal Velour", 56 cm, possibly late 1930s. This is the 2nd hat from my recent 9 hat find. The Velour is really fantastic (color, finish, hand) and very pliable. The sweatband is textured and is very soft. The tip patch is in mint condition and the hat appears to have been seldom worn. This hat was sold by Julius Reiter Eger / Cheb Czechoslovakia (prior to WWI Austria Hungary).

Echter Borsalino "Qualità Superiore" "Caffè" "--" "Dragosti", FP 5, possibly late 1930s. This is the 3rd hat of a 9 hat find. The smooth coffee colored Felt is of a medium weight and easily dry creases. Medium width Ribbon with a sporty Bow design. The condition is excellent and it still has the Eulan paper tag. This hat was most likely sold in Eger / Cheb Czechoslovakia (prior to WWI Austria Hungary).

Anton Peschel Neutitschein, Peschel "Kristall", 57 cm possibly late 1930s early 1940s. This is the 4th hat from a 9 hat find. I believe this is the only Smooth Finish APN Hat I have encountered. It fits more like a 58 cm so happy about that. The Medium Gray Felt is of a lighter weight and easy dry creases. The Form and Dimensions are similar to Echter Borsalinos. Mid Ribbon with an interesting Bow design.

4 1/4 crown as shaped
2 inch pewter grosgrain ribbon
1 3/4 brim with guild edge

I love the color of this Dobbs Guild edge. It is a brownish grey that in some lights throws off some lavender or plum undertones. It has a cool little look to it. The oilskin liner says maybe 50s but the manufacturing tag says maybe 60s... so I’d guess late 50s early 60s

Well, at long last, I finally got my Indy hat. I, like many others, have been inspired by the Indy fedora to get into hats, and what I initially thought would have been a pleasant experience in landing the mothership, it was actually quite the opposite. After doing some research and some brain racking, I decided to go with Penman due to his reputation as a hatter, namely with Indy hats. I placed my order last January for a custom Raiders without the turn. John informed me that without the turn, it would look like the gray travel hat, and not the "hero" hat. I told him my concerns with the turn, and he told me to let him know what I decided. My hat was to be ready around July.

Thinking that I had time to ponder a final decision, I let it sit for a couple of weeks. I then sent an email with questions, and never received a reply. I figured, by mistake, that I would hear back when it came time to build my hat. Fast forward to July. Still no word. I sent another email with more questions, and stated that I changed my mind and wanted the turn. I figured I would regret not getting it. Still no response. About two weeks later I receive an email (in a new thread) with pics of my finished hat, without the turn. He apparently never got any of my emails, but he'd see what he could do about moving the crease, but there may be old crease lines. I told him if that were the case then to not re-crease it, but he'd see what he would do.

I received the hat in August, exactly as it was shown in the pic I was sent when the hat was finished. I started going back and forth with him on what it would take to get the turn. He told me that if he were to add the turn, he would have to tear the hat apart and reblock it to remove the old crease lines, put the breakline back in, flange it and then put the hat back together. I don't know why none of this was mentioned before shipping the hat. He then wanted to charge me for the repair and shipping, plus wait in line again. I found this to be completely unacceptable, and he eventually agreed to do the work for free.

I finally received the hat today, and the first thing I noticed when I took it out of the box was the old crease line. Disappointment doesn't even begin to describe how I felt. And to think all of this could have been avoided with simple communication. I just don't get it. I'm pretty speechless about it, and at this point, I'm pretty exhausted just thinking about this whole scenario. I suppose this Indy hat is better than no Indy hat. I'll try hitting it with some steam and see what happens.

Sorry to hear about your experience. For what it’s worth.. it’s still a bad ass hat and looks good on you. Hopefully you can work out the lines.

If it makes you feel any better, the old crease lines actually give it some adventure-wear. Adds some character to it. I think you rock it but still, I feel your frustration through the post. I wish it had turned out better for you. Again, I think you look great in it.
I agree with Jesse John. It shouldn't have been so difficult for you to get the hat you wanted, but that extra hint of a crease does give it more character and makes that hat uniquely yours. And it looks good on you too!
