J. Hückel´s Söhne "Jota" "Seal Velour", 56 cm, possibly late 1930s. This is the 6th hat (and 2nd "Jota" "Seal Velour") from my recent 9 hat find. The Velour is really fantastic (color, finish, hand) and very pliable. The sweatband is textured and is very soft. The tip patch is in mint condition and the hat appears to have been seldom worn. Luckily this hat fits me even though it's marked 56 cm. This hat was sold by Julius Reiter Eger / Cheb Czechoslovakia (prior to WWI Austria Hungary).

Great build on that one. I have a hat in the @belfastboy queue and I'm looking forward to it. Robert is certainly detail oriented and it shows in his hats.

Another great Wolfbrae! @belfastboy has been doing some great work for me and he’s an absolute pleasure to work with. This hat is from a Millinery Warehouse western rabbit fur felt body that I’d consider to be moderately stiff for a western. The color is bottle green. It’s a nice weight and has a nice hand in my opinion. It’s approximately 3X6 and took both water and a generous amount to steam to shape. It’s also one of the most comfortable wearing westerns I’ve ever had on my head.

Silverbelly felt
4 1/2 crown as shaped (about 5 open)
2 inch tan w/ charcoal spotted striped grosgrain ribbon with back bow
2 1/8 rolled underwelt brim

I had inquired with the seller regarding the Moth holes in the felt on this Silverbelly Stevens Pacesetter. They assured me that they did not go all the way through the felt. Turns out they were incorrect as a few of them do. But I’m not too worried about it as it was the really awesome ribbon that caught my eye and I got it at the right price. The ribbon is a super cool and unusual medium tan with charcoal speckled stripes fashioned in a back bow. In certain lights there is a pink or lavender tone to it. But in direct sunlight it’s definitely more tan. The felt on the crown is super soft. Almost so much so it didn’t want to hold shape at first... but after a good brushing which released clouds of dust... it kinda sprung to life. The felt is a very nice Silverbelly shade I don’t see as much on dress hats. The aforementioned mothing is a little more than I preferred a few spots entirely through the felt on the crown. The largest of which is hidden in the pinch along with more under the brim. I had taken more photos of the mothing... but for some reason They did not save. I may use this as an opportunity to attempt a moth divot repair. Either way it’s a fun little hat with a real unusual whimsical ribbon and it fits rather nicely.

Ohhhh. Think I’ll go with that... it’s the little speckle pattern from the ribbon spread on to the felt. What a modern pop culture design!

I'm not sure "bottle green" was a traditional color for hats in the old west, but I don't care 'cause I like it!

Many of the hats in black & white westerns were in fact bottle-green. They showed up better than black hats in the transition to film and, subsequently, the screens (both big and little). Similar to how the “Addams Family” house interior was, in reality, pink.

... but I could be wrong.

I understand this completely. Filming in black and white could be a very colorful affair on-set simply because the actual colors of everything didn't matter--it was how they photographed on film (i.e. which shade of gray) that mattered.

But considering the hats worn by the average man in the old west were working hats, I have to wonder how many hatters took the time to dye them green. I'd guess that's a pretty low percentage.

Has anyone seen a dog...I mean hat dyed dark green? Damn, that song is over 40 years old...how can that be when I’m still in my 20s?

The elephants foot looks like painted ceramic. I've seen real ones made into a spittoon with a Sterling silver lid. You step on a peddle to open the lid to spit.
