No Brand - Black OR Style

DEBCCCA5-629E-4D17-B7C8-EC36D1303172.jpeg

Black short to medium length felt
4 1/2 Centerfire Crease
3/8 black grosgrain ribbon
3 1/4 Brim with 1/8 matching grosgrain bound edge

Really love this non branded hat and really impressed how well it cleaned up. One of several hats that came in that used to belong to an old rancher in the mid west. No brand Mark to be found anywhere.. though it could have worn off from the sweat. Only markings is a hand written four digit number 4150 on the inside of the sweat and the spot where the size tag used to be. Which matches in location of a similar white one I received. The thin but supple sweat is both sewn and taped. It has a super cool Centerfire like crease... though its almost more a triple fire... or let’s call it hellfire crease. Playing with the brim I found I don’t prefer it fully up OR down... but more of snapped down at the break and curled up at the edge.

You should wear westerns more often: you look good under this Resistol. I also like the silver and turquoise band...it’s bold, but you can definitely pull it off.

Thank you Brent.. I had a feeling you might dig this one. I have a tough time warming up to the big brim. Maybe if I play with the bumpers some. At some point we want to move out of the burbs further to the country... I suspect they’ll grow on me.

Optimo... Zephyr? That is what the seller called it. In Optimo's site they have Light Weight felts, and that's what I think this is.
It has wonderful felt, on par with my vintage Willoughby Tuxedo and my John the hatter
Thin, soft, and with an excellent, smooth hand. Obedient, without being floppy.
Very, very nice. I think this is my favorite Optimo felt, and it is actually cheaper than the others

I think I saw that 3X. Cool liner. Great deal on that one! Congratulations
Thanks, Joe. I couldn’t pass it up. I’ve never had a hat like it. The felt is thick and soft, and it has gravity. It just molds right to my head. There are some pretty deep moth bites on the brim, but the dark color hides them.

How cool. Love it when a hat just suits you that way. Look forward to your new pics with it.

Well as a ty to my wife I grabbed her a new gardening hat, an Akubra Planter (Hemp straw model).

Before putting it on her head she had cut the original ribbon off....ack! I said what if it doesn't fit ? lol, it's the smallest size they make and I had to pad it a wee bit hehehe (used bamboo tissue). But she went to work on her own taste on a new ribbon for her new hat and then asked me to steam and change the shape slightly to something like a lot of the hats I wear. She's never been a girly girl if you know what I mean, a bit Tom-boy wildcat. Anyways, here's a couple of snaps of the finished job.

edit: should have taken a before photo I know, I always forget

OPS Era Portis Swansback - Breeze Lux

View attachment 277134

OPS Era Portis Swansback - Breeze Lux
Steel Grey bluish tones
4 1/4 Pork Pieish crown as shaped - 5 1/2 open
1 3/4 cobalt grayish blue grosgrain ribbon
2 1/2 brim with tight underwelt

For Election Day I am debuting my very first Portis. The OPS tag points to an early 1950s (1951 to 1953) dating. Prior to today I had only seen it in poor lighting and didn’t realize the blue tones in the felt and ribbon. Had assumed it to be silver with black ribbon.. but it turns out it’s more of a steel blue with a cobalt blue/dark grey ribbon. A beautiful combination. The original owner had left a piece of point board type material inside... I assume he used for forming the pork pie shape in the crown. I’m not soled on the crown shape but it will stay for now. The Swans Down finish is super soft and smooth. I’ve heard a lot of good things about Portis hats and this one for me supports those thoughts. If I remember correctly this one came off a tip from @BobHufford Thanks Bob!!

It arrived in this super cool Lee Pan Am box. Would have loved to have found that hat too!

That is a fantastic find, Joe. I hope I didn't miss that one on Ebay. Great shape and colour. Not my kind of crease to be honest, but that's up to the wearer. The hat box is cool as well.
