Stetson 3X Beaver - Steel Grey

B5A01392-9390-4C7B-B38D-29F4AD71A7BD.jpeg

Stetson 3X Beaver Quality - Steel Grey (1950s ?)
6 inch open crown - rakish 5 to 4 inch as shaped
1 7/8 Black Grosgrain Ribbon with Box Bow treatment.
2 1/8 brim with 1/8 accented bound edge

After a much appreciated nudging by @M Hatman I decided to pull the trigger on this Stetson 3X Beaver Quality (along with a short brimmed Strat) We are estimating mid 1950s on this one. When it arrived the nearly 6 inch open crown looked almost freakish with the short brim. But I think I managed to settle on a shape I like here. The Steel grey felt has some blue tones is real nice dense and smooth... I would say very similar to my 50s whippet In quality. And it has GILLs! Very nice hat over all.

I absolutely love it. It looks great on you. As an avid Indy fan who also got into hats because of this fedora, it definitely shows as a true Indy hat, and will also serve as a fine looking fedora as well. Now it's time to run it through some cob webs and coat it in some desert dust.

This hat looks amazing bro

Looks good, Jared. I sent a couple of FEPSA bodies over to Michelle to work on (Raiders and LC). Hope they turn out as good as yours did.

Thanks gents! That's exciting news, Garrett. Can't wait to see some pictures of the finished product.

California is having a big heat wave, so this one is getting acquainted with my band block for now. Here's a comparison, just for fun, but this is why I'm really sold on the block:

Stetson Stratoliner

53D971E4-9ADF-4302-A946-C9EA0ABBC2D6.jpeg

Stetson Stratoliner - Late 40s/Early 50s
Tan/Grey/Green felt
4 1/2 to 3 1/2 rakish crown
3/8 grosgrain ribbon
2 inch raw edge brim
2 inch soft brown sweatband

It was the travel mate of yesterday’s 3X Beaver. This Stratoliner it seems likely at some point had its brim trimmed to 2 inches... but I really like the look it creates. The felt on this hat is fairly thin and lightweight and the color seems to shift dramatically depending on light anywhere from tan to grey to green. As such it is hard to get a good color rendition in the photos. There is no liner in the hat. I’m not sure whether it had one or not. My gut is that it probably did. Consulting with @M Hatman we are thinking late 40s early 50s. It is a light weight grab and go hat that I have been doing just that with a lot lately. Pretty great for a 70ish year old hat.

I have ready in multiple threads that the felt on these tends to be thick, stiff and not easily shaped. I am finding the opposite, the felt is relatively thin, soft and very malleable. The test will be changing the catteman's crease to something that suites me a bit more.

6” open crown, 3 1/8” raw edge brim. Thick, but not overly firm, western weight fur felt. Reminds me of 1960s-‘70s western 3-5X hats. Nothing hiding behind the sweatband. I wonder if it was made by Bandera, but there isn’t much to go on other than the size tag.

It’s a sand color felt. It’s not yellow as it appears. The smoke from the wildland fires is giving everything a yellow/orange tint.

Dobbs Hanover Square

Dobbs Hanover Square
Grey/Silver/Green
5 inch open crown (4 1/2 as shaped)
2 inch silver grosgrain ribbon
2 1/2 brim with 3/8 Matching grosgrain binding

I stumbled upon this beauty... Dobbs Hanover Square. I have seen the some here who have this model enjoy them greatly. The Hanover Square clearly seems to have been Dobbs stab at Stetson’s ever popular Whippet of the 1950s. Man did Dobbs do a great job. If I am to compare the two.. the Hanover Square is a bit lighter softer felt as opposed to Stetsons stiffer.. but still very high quality felt. So probably a matter of preference there. I tend to prefer the softer felt on the Dobbs here... but I still appreciate the quality on the Stetson.

I had thought the felt was a light silver grey with a silver ribbon. But in stepping outside I also saw green tones to both. As is the case with a lot of these old felts the colors can shift in different lights.

This one originally sold for $11.95 at Popular Dry Goods Co. I’m thinking based on the manufacturing tag I would place this one in early to mid 1960s. Though curious to opinions.

From ads we've seen, the Hanover Square's run seems to be from ~1951-1960. At least nobody has been able to dig up an ad for one post-'60. Here is an ad from a 1951 Esquire for the Hanover Square. Note the price points are $10 and $12.50. Your price point would suggest somewhere in that time frame, IMHO.

And how about that "come hither look" from Mary Beth Nichols?

Knox Superfine Homburg - Chocolate Brown
5 3/4 Crown
2 inch Copper/brown grosgrain Ribbon
2 1/2 brim front/back - 2 1/4 sides - 5/8 binding

When @BobHufford tipped me off to this hat, from just an image of it’s dusty top, he said “This Might be something” I will say with full certainty I believe it is to me anyhow. And I will also give it a little story to go along with it.

The very last conversation I had with my mom before she passed last week... was a simple text from her asking what do you want for your birthday. To which I replied. “Hmm.. I don’t know” I had no idea she was even sick or that this would be our last “conversation” This hat had kind been in limbo with somewhat delayed shipping for a couple weeks... And I really had no idea what to expect I would find. On the day she passed... the day after my birthday... the box With this hat arrived at my door. Now being that my mother is forever known for being late... but NEVER missing anything. I have decided this is the last birthday present from my mom. And WOW is it beautiful! Thank you Mom. I love it! And thank you Bob for playing a part in making this happen.

A very special hat, with a back story that is even more special. Happy birthday, and condolences.
