From ads we've seen, the Hanover Square's run seems to be from ~1951-1960. At least nobody has been able to dig up an ad for one post-'60. Here is an ad from a 1951 Esquire for the Hanover Square. Note the price points are $10 and $12.50. Your price point would suggest somewhere in that time frame, IMHO.

And how about that "come hither look" from Mary Beth Nichols?
Excellent Jim. I really did feel 50s on this one at first. However The manufacturing tag without crown height was telling me 60s... so I went conservative on my guess. I do think though those “1960s tags” may have started showing up in the late 50s

Tress and Co - London - Bowler - Chocolate Brown

Tress and Co - London - Bowler - Chocolate Brown
4 1/2 hard crown
Approx 1 inch brown grosgrain ribbon And matching brim binding
1 3/8 brim front - 1 1/2 Sides

While the bowler/derby is not a style I wear often, the chance to add a brown English bowler wasn’t one I wanted to pass up. This Tress and Co - London - Made in England bowler has a rather short brim ranging from 1 3/8 to 1 1/2 and the ‘hard hat’ protective crown. This one I do not think is particularly old. However Tress was bought out by Christys in 1953 and closes by 1967. I do not know if Christys used the brand afterward. I do love the liner styling.

Lobbia Borsalino Qualità Extra Superiore. Size is 5 57 cm. for Europe and 7 for the USA
blupo-2-jpg.256350

For many details in the finishes and from the celled label it may be made in the late thirties
blupo-etichetta-jpg.256351

The paper label is soiled and with some difficult you can read Lupo (color) c. Nera (black ribbon and Goluela or Gulaela.
blupo-interno-jpg.256352

The interior is clean and in very good conditions despite the age
blupo-4-jpg.256353

The color of the medium weight felt is Lupo one of the many greys used by Borsalino, the ribbon is black and the curled brim has the same color of the felt.
blupo-3-jpg.256354

The measurements are as follow: the brim are 6 cm. the shaped crowm is 11 cm., the ribbon is 4 cm.

These are the details make me thinking about its age. The large sweatband 5 cm. the stamps and the trade mark with the yellow oilskin.

A classic in its time for your pleasure.
It is not my size ;)

Stetson ‘Genuine Handwoven Formosan’

Stetson ‘Genuine Handwoven Formosan’ Straw
Natural color straw
4 3/4 crown
3 1/8 brim (labeled 3 inch)

A bit of lawn work had me go with this new arrival straw Stetson ‘Genuine Handwoven Formosan’ and it was a good choice on this very warm but breezy afternoon. It has a nice weave to it.. but also seems to have some small aeration holes here and there. Not sure if that was part of the weave or if a previous owner maybe got at it with a toothpick or something. Either way they do the job.

Dobbs Hanover Square

Dobbs Hanover Square
Grey/Silver/Green
5 inch open crown (4 1/2 as shaped)
2 inch silver grosgrain ribbon
2 1/2 brim with 3/8 Matching grosgrain binding

I stumbled upon this beauty... Dobbs Hanover Square. I have seen the some here who have this model enjoy them greatly. The Hanover Square clearly seems to have been Dobbs stab at Stetson’s ever popular Whippet of the 1950s. Man did Dobbs do a great job. If I am to compare the two.. the Hanover Square is a bit lighter softer felt as opposed to Stetsons stiffer.. but still very high quality felt. So probably a matter of preference there. I tend to prefer the softer felt on the Dobbs here... but I still appreciate the quality on the Stetson.

I had thought the felt was a light silver grey with a silver ribbon. But in stepping outside I also saw green tones to both. As is the case with a lot of these old felts the colors can shift in different lights.

This one originally sold for $11.95 at Popular Dry Goods Co. I’m thinking based on the manufacturing tag I would place this one in early to mid 1960s. Though curious to opinions.

Nice catch, Joe. The Hanover Square is a fantastic hat, one of Dobbs' best. There's another one on Etsy I believe (a size small for me though - a 6 7/8).

Another nice catch. I don't think Tress was continued after 1967. This looks like a later sixties hat, so likely close to the closing date of the company and brand.

Thanks for that info on the Tress history. That goes along with what u was thinking. Does make for a fun change of pace hat

Nice: keep them coming!

I’ll try :)

I have a special place in my heart for French hats. I have many and from different eras having found splendid opportunities on the European market. Probably without the French hat of the nineteenth century we will not have hats as we know and love them.
soolsm-1_modificato-1-jpg.256951

Today I show you a Sools made by Mossant
soolsm-3_modificato-1-jpg.256952

Sools was a shop that branded the hats produced with its own name.
soolsm-4_modificato-1-jpg.256953

This is a Sools - Mossant Imperial size 58 or 5 1/2 on the French size scale or 7 1/4 on the American scale
soolsm-interno-jpg.256954

The hat is in very malleable felt with some very refined construction details, see the finish of the brim

The color is "Plomb" (Lead) and the ribbon matches it as color
soolsm-6-jpg.256967

These are the measures of this elegance: brim are 5.5 cm, the open crown measures 12.5 cm. and the ribbon is 4cm
It is not my size. Lovers of European hats are warned ;)

In my search for French hats, I came across a very difficult brand to find because they often produced as subcontractors for large French brands. I have some examples of Ecuyer & Thomas with the original brand and others built for brands like Sools, Motsch and others.
ET 1.jpg

This Ecuyer & Thomas wears what was their last "Chapeau Everest" brand when French hats were on the brink
ET 3.jpg

Ecuyer & Thomas "Everest" size 58 or 5 1/2 in the French size scale or 7 1/4 in the American one
ET 2.jpg

The hat is made of medium weight felt with good construction details
ET Interno.jpg

The color is "Faisan" (Pheasant) and the ribbon is the same color
ET Etichetta 2.jpg
ET marocchino.jpg
These are the measures of the "Chapeu Everest": brim are 5 cm, the shaped crown measures 10.5 cm. and the ribbon is 4cm.
ET 4.jpg

Another good example of European headwear for those who love it

Latest late summer purchase, for now.
bbiver-5-jpg.257105

A beautiful Borsalino that comes from central Italy.
bbiver-4-jpg.257106

Borsalino Qualità Extra Superiore. Size is 5 1/2 or 58cm or 7 1/8 US
bbiver-1-jpg.257107

The hat is in excellent condition with felt and matching trimmings with an ensured elegance effect.
bbiver-etichetta-jpg.257108

The color of the felt is "Biber" and the type is Faunosca 38 1/2. It is a light and very malleable felt
bbiver-interno-jpg.257109

I think it was produced in the 1950s or early 1960s.
The measurements are as follows: the finished brims with seam and trim in the same color as the ribbon are 7 cm. The shaped crown is 11 cm. and the ribbon that matches the same color of the felt is 3 centimeters.
bbiver-3-jpg.257112

It is another of the hats that I regret for the size that is not mine

Here are some pictures of a re-creased "The Capri" from JJ Hat Center. Part of their season-end sale. This is a "Grade 8" panama in tan with a brown band and a 2 3/4" brim. It shipped with a center crease. I purposely chose a center crease panama with the hope of re-creasing it into a diamond bash. I also lowered the crown. Here are the results:

20200829_160507.jpg

This panama has significant crown taper comparable to the Akubra Stylemaster's.

20200829_162148.jpg

This panama was shipped with a feather.

20200829_160540.jpg

Rear view of the diamond crease:

20200829_160605.jpg

After widening the crown for the diamond, the hat runs big in size. With some hat spacers, the hat fits fine.

20200829_160842.jpg

Overall, I am pleased with my purchase. JJ Hat Center makes no indication of what their definition of "Grade 8" panama weave is, so I guess it's left up to interpretation.
