My new Stetson Fortune and Glory arrived today. Great hat with a beautiful Tobacco color 100X felt. Pictures don't do it justice. Lightweight and comfortable.

Found this Stetson 3X (with embroidered Last Drop liner) in an antique store yesterday. Not my size (of course), but it needs to get back out in the world doing what it was made to do so it will be moved on to a loving home.

Ps: Willow and I were looking at phone pics yesterday. Took awhile. I laughed like a fool cause everytime we hit one with me and that beard i had she’d pipe up “Uncle Bob”!!
Funny part was she’d argue with me about it. I lost, she won, i’m jealous. Lol
We were looking for pics of her Paul Bond “Kabob” boots you pointed me too.

Ha,ha ... that technique is a bit too formal. I just use old locally sourced sticks and it doesn't hurt to wear a similar hat to what I'm trying to locate.

Give Willow a big "howdy-howdy" (as my Dad used to say) from me.

The first new hat I've bought in a while.

This antique boater was $10.00 at a local flea-market. Another $10.00 was spent in getting a new sweatband put in. It's got one or two minor dents, but no major damage, and is perfectly wearable!

I was told it was from about 1900-1920...

I received my Akubra Sydney Saturday afternoon. I am very pleased with the hat and the service from David Morgan. The Regency Fawn is a sand color from my eye. I believe it will be a hat color that will suit itself with whatever I wear.

The Sydney is a light hat but This I s my first Akubra. I really can’t compare it to other higher end hats. Compared to my less expensive hats it was far superior in feel and craftsmanship.

The Sydney comes open crown and took my dry diamond bash and pinched front well.

Stetson Forty: the hat is blocked very straight and the open crown is six inches. The brim is 2 5/8 inches and has a Cavanagh edge. No stains or mothing, but the liner does show some foxing. The sweatband doesn’t include a store or any other markings other than those shown in my photo. The tag under the sweatband makes me wonder if it was reblocked, and the 7 5/8 markings don’t match the “3/4” keyhole size tag. The hat fits me perfectly.

The felt is the best I’ve seen. It’s not as thin and light as some, but it’s dense and easily molded to any shape desired.

I don’t recall seeing another Stetson Forty, and I’d love to see others if they’re out there.

So here’s a few upon arrival and opening. What’s really impressive to me is the pristine case. Seems tough to find that.

I’m 0 for 2 in my latest attempts for hats outside or inside of my size range. My latest attempt, thanks to some MO enablers, one Setter, the other Retriever. I thank them both for their time and especially the effort of the Retriever to secure the hat. Probably the cleanest 3X OR I’ve seen and certainly the nicest one under my roof. The great thing about this one is the felt. Thin and dense with a fine finish. My only other 3X OR is likely a 40’s Model with an oilcloth protected LD liner and the same dimensions as this one. 2 7/8 x 5 1/2.

This hat appears to be a much more recent rendition. Most notably there are no mfg labels underside and the LD liner is spot glued. The surprising thing about this hat is the felt. It is much more dense and thin than one I would have expected from this era. Every bit the equal of my 40’s hat and perhaps better and it does have a better finish. Makes me think of a new hat made with an old blank. Just my thoughts, not a claim. A really soft dress weight OR that can be shaped with a swipe.

The 0 for 2 part is that it doesn’t fit, a bit off. Thought she wanted it but no.

Thanks to Randall @Randall Renshaw for the heads up on this one on ebay. Got it for $12 ! I don’t think it’s ever been worn. It’s a 6-3/4 but couldn’t pass it up. It’s on the stretcher now, so hopefully I’ll post it in WHAYWT in a few days...

Wonderfully soft felt and a pretty cool color combo with the dark gray and chocolate brown ribbon, instead of black. O.P.S. Price tag still attached on the outside of the sweat.

Introducing the Musketeer Lite from Phoenix Hats

The back story:

Some time back, Rick @humanshoes started playing with a variety of ribbon combinations which got this whole thing started. Most of my felt hats are 2 ½ to 2 ¾ inch brims with a 4 ½ to 5 inch finished crown and 1 ¼ to 1 ¾ ribbon (westerns, derby’s and thin ribbons being the exceptions). I have one black short hair trilby (1 7/8 brim) that is a great grab-n-go hat. While I’m not heavy into trilby’s myself, I thought, why not build a sporty, grab-n-go, 50’s patterned short brim model with some unique features that breaks away from my “norm”. And so the new hat started to take shape (pun intended)! Recently, a post was made of a Stetson Musketeer and, to be honest, I was surprised at the similarities. While there are obvious differences, this one certainly makes its mark as a Lite version of the Stetson Musketeer.

The Hat:

The hat is a Natural felt which tends toward gray/brown. The first and most obvious difference from the norm is the twin ribbon configuration using stacked ½ inch Saddle color and ½ inch tan color ribbons. The original plan was to make a pork pie, flat top crown but the final version turned into more of a telescope crown which, to me, suits the hat better. It maintains the Fedora look without drifting too far towards a Gambler. Sides are mostly straight but, to give it the sporty look, Rick added a rake from 4 ½ in front to an even 4 inches in the rear. The brim is 2 ¼ raw edge with a light flange and incorporates triple-stitching with the contrasting tan thread. I love the final outcome but there are a lot of earth tones going on with this hat so I thought I would add a splash of color. What do you think?

Fit and finish are spot-on as we have come to expect. Hats I get from Rick just keep getting better and better and I am mighty proud to add this “keeper” to my collection. Thank you, Rick.
