Picked up this Portis western, my first green hat. Came in about as dirty as any I've bought. Turned the gas almost black. The glued in liner came out and the plastic tip protector cracked so I removed it. Washed the liner in woolite and it washed away most of the bucking bronco and cowboy. The Portis logo and the cowboy's hat remained. Must have been in a cattleman crease most of its life and some shadowing remains after I opened it up. Now to figure out a crease and what I'm going to do with the brim.

Maybe a Great Green Gus?
Regardless of crease or curl, it's a great hat. I am of a similar color with envy.

Love a back bow, they are fairly easy to date. I have it's cousin in a hatbox waiting for felt season. What is the liner like? The brim stitching is a nice feature. Most of these back bows are from a small window of fashon in the mid to late 50s. It was a fall back to a style from the early 20th century (1920s ?) The tags under the sweat may also give some clues.

Ha, great! Yea, I bought it precisely for the back bow. Thank you for giving me some clues. It's certainly brim stitched. I really wanted a center dent hat for a while, and the color is charcoal grey. I'll look under the hood and let you know what I find. Glad to have a connoisseur helping me out.

What a beautiful color
Looking forward to seeing what you dig into it
Plenty to work with there
Very nice hat

I've had this one for a couple weeks. It's finally cool enough to wear it outside. Yes, I have been wearing it in the house! lol
1940's Imperial Stetson. I've wanted one for several years now. The quality of the felt is amazing.

And the third installment of the Great International Hat Swap of '17.
Thus was the first one I looked at, and it was in my mental shopping cart before I even saw the last pic. A true no-brainer.

Mayser Spezial Homburg, 50's vintage.

Felt and construction are everything I'd hoped for all these years seeing Steve's Maysers (plus those of other Loungers) but never having handled one. In a word, marvelous.
Crown at 5 1/2" open, brim at 2 1/4". 143g.

Head shot:

Now I want more Maysers...:)

John, That is a real beauty! You started off really well. :) It's probably very early 1950s but might be a bit older. The "Mayser" on the sweatband is something I haven't seen on 1950s Mayser hats before. Also the taped sweatband seam points earlier.

It is a very nice hat and I did hang on to it for quite some time even though I hardly ever wore it (because of the size). Now that I have several homburg hats in brown it was time to let it go to someone who appreciates it. Glad you like it and again: good to see it get worn.

Thanks Steve! There was no tough decision to make here! Also thanks for the expertise in narrowing down the age. No nice clear date stamp to make things easy!

It will be well enjoyed.

Thanks, Ant. I didn't know you had an Imperial. I should have figured you had one! The felt is great.... the brim width is most impressive. Love this hat.
