Me too guys! I focus primarily on lightweights, but do not recognize this hat. The cloth covered leather sweat (if that is what it actually is) reminds me of a Knox Vagabond I found a while back, and my Dobbs Doublelife (being a pinhead does have some rewards). See below.

I am hoping for a Cavanagh version that resembles one or the other of these. It may just be a ribbon sweat, and I'd be nervous about it being a woman's hat if it was not co-branded Marshall Field's men's store.

Blackjack, looking at the photo of the hat by itself I'd normally agree with Monte about the brim width. But after seeing it on your head in the second photo, I think that brim width suits you rather well. With regards to the ribbon color and the crease, that all depends on your tastes and whatever wardrobe you might be trying to match. I like the imperfect look of a hand-creased hat, but I can see why some might consider that look too informal to wear with a business suit; it depends on where and why you'll wear it.

The brim is 2 3/8 not 2 1/2 , that's my favorite brim size... like I said it is a work in progress

Looks like an unusual style from the 1960s. This one fills that bill also, a little earlier and perhaps a woman's hat.

I will advise upon receipt ;-). Yours is a much more intriguing find though. I saw a Resistol "continental" hat for sale in eBay recently that had some features in common. It was styled as a much older hat and had a pretty convincing liner design, but also had a plastic plastic protector. Did you see it? I'll look for pics.

My new American Legend (Beaver Brand) 5X beaver in green arrived today. It's a decent hat. For the price I can't really complain. There are a few things I'll need to work on. My first order of business was to remove the stitching at the rear where the sweat is sown one end to the other. The sweat wasn't cut properly, which created a very uncomfortable little bump there. I'll trim and restitch it later. The felt is a little disappointing. It's similar to the Imperial felt of my Akubra, but not quite as smooth. It doesn't hold a candle to my 50s Knox Fifteen. I can really see what all the fuss is about when it come to vintage hats. I guess I was expecting more from a hat that is supposed to be at least part beaver.

The sizing is poor too, but in my favor. The hat is labeled a 7 1/8 and fits my 7 3/8 noggin pretty well. I may attempt to elongate it a tiny bit for a perfect fit. It came with a pretty deep center dent that I didn't care for, so a dampened it and did a quick c-crown. I'm fairly happy with the results. The felt in the brim is thick and very stiff. The felt in the crown feels thin and very flimsy which made it challenging to keep smooth when bashing it. I may need to stiffen it some. Still, for the price I'm pleased.

Here are some pics. My phone didn't do a great job of capturing the color. The first pic of the underside is the truest representation. The others are completely off color-wise.

Not sure you should be assuming a 5X has any beaver fur in the felt even if the word "Beaver" is written next to the 5X....

Grey Long Hair Royal Stetson

I picked this Royal Stetson recently. I don't know what this felt finish would be called except a type of long hair. The only markings are the number stamped on the back of the sweatband. I'm guessing it is from the early 50s or late 40s but I don't know. Maybe someone on the lounge could help pin down a date when they thing the hat was made and the actual name for this type of felt finish. The hat has a 2 1/4" raw edge brim with three rows of stitching and a 5 /2" open crown.

Very nice indeed! Looks like a good match for my Stetson Railbird. I will try to get a pic soon for comparison. I call it a "heather," finish and consider it rare in fur felt (although common enough in wool).

Memphis, Your Buckaroo hat made me think of my Dad's old hat that I had restored. Your brim looks to have so much life to it. My old hat's brim seems so lifeless and therefore I don't wear it that much.

Thanx men. My wife said it looks more elegant....what does that mean? How about Rugged, or Manlike? Anyhoo, I'll have to ask my dad if he remembers what brand the hat is or how old it is. He's 80 in a few weeks. Still makes hay for his cattle, among other farm and ranch duties too numerous to mention.
