... for the post-war era, the Knox One Hundred might be in the running. Stunning clear beaver felt quality with the finest execution of a felted edge that I've seen yet. These photos out of the box - I was having a blast dry molding creases. More to follow.

It should be worn and I expect that I will sell it. I am going to savor it for a bit first and take some good photos. I've sold both the Stetson 100s I have owned. Those were 1960s hats. This is earlier, more flexible and much sweeter.

Here's a picture of my latest acquisition: A deep brown Richman Brothers in 7 3/8





Purchase price? A whole $4.28 including tax! Picked it up at the local Goodwill store. It's in fairly good shape and looked really good after a brushing.

Alan you are absolutely correct. The Knox 100 is about the BEST hat ever. Hard to follow, but here goes...

(This may NOT be the best hat ever, but a find, for sure... ) Waiting on my doorstep this afternoon, a Stetson 3X Open Road, barely worn (I thought it was a NOS at first glance) in an unbelievable size SEVEN and SEVEN EIGHTHS!

HatsrMe theres lots of cool hats out there, and you certainly have your share of 'em. In my opinion, for what it's worth, the Open Road is pretty much the pinnacle of cool. Pinch front or western crease, it sets the standard. Congrats on that great find.

Righto... I read through Josh's wonderful opus. This is its twin, in the same size but in pristine condition.

ok gents a little of a conundrum. I picked up this Federation Deluxe and I kept trying to get the perfect indy crease and something just wasn't right, then I realized what it was, the brim has been cut down to 2 1/2" all the way around, not the dimensional cut associated with the Feds, and yes, its a Fed III I believe.

I contacted the seller and he said that is the way it came from Hats Direct and has offered to provide a refund. my question, how important is the dimensional brim? it fits well and is in really good shape for a heritage grade fed III, but because I'm looking for the "indy" hat, I wonder if it will always bother me everytime I put it on, or if it's something I'll learn to love? what would you do in this situation?

If it's a regular-wear kinda hat, I'm pretty strict about reselling hats that I don't like. I'm a wearer more than a collector, myself, so YMMV, but for me, if I'm not going to wear the hat, I won't keep it.

That is a nice hat anyway you look at it. Akubra doesn't make Fed3's anymore plus it looks good on you.
Now the question to ask yourself is, would I wear this hat if I had a true "Indy" hat?
It never will be an "Indy" hat due to the brim as you stated but is it close enough or will you continue the quest?
You'll probably get called Indy enough when wearing it or asked where's your whip...
I'm not into having an exact replica, so I'd keep it, wear it, quest completed...on to the next one...

Wow, Alan, that is one sweet hat! I can only imagine what it feels like. One heckuva an expensive hat in the 1940s.
