Thanks very much for the information and links - fascinating history. The illustration of the factory shows another time and place for the popularity of hats. The label in my hat shows Nový Jičín and the word under "Tonak" is Gazeta - a style, I'm guessing. The velour finish is very beautiful... low lustre - it looks like a normal felt, until you touch it.

"Gazeta" is a new one to me regarding JHS. It is Slavic so probably a product of the time it was made. If possible can you post a photo of the paper label behind the sweatband?

Speaking of black hats (from the "well dressed man" thread) here is a John B. from Jackson, WY, never been creased. I could definitely pass for Amish with this one. I may fashion it similar to Alanfgag's Number 1, I like the way he did the crown and brim on that one.

Alan, Thanks! The paper label is also in Czech. This is the first early TONAK I have seen in detail. Mark C has an early TONAK Seal Velour but never posted details. This is an example of 1930s JHS label for comparison.

I would love to know more about the felt composition used for this hat. While pouncing must have a lot to do with the final finish, the hand seems quite different from other beaver felt velour hats that I have handled. Then again, I am a rookie hat handler.

So today one of my grail hats turned up, although actually it's two in one, being my first Open Road and a 7x CB. Although it's a 7 1/8, it required very little to jack it up to my 7 1/4LO head. Very little worn, a very small moth divot an a couple of tiny stains.

I also had to change the crease as the top of my head is too high for it otherwise. I now see why everyone raves about this felt, smooth soft and pliable, I din't even have to steam it to change the crease, although it's still one of the stiffer felts I have.

I don't look happy but I really am!

I would think its rabbit / hare with maybe some beaver for durability. As I mentioned JHS was known internationally for their very fine velour finishes. The processes they and other Nový Jičín (Neutitschein) hat companies (A. Peschel & Brüder Böhm) used were both complicated and labor / time intensive ( could take 1 month). You just don't see the very fine Austrian velour finishes much after the mid 50s. Robert (RLK) dug up some patents that dealt with the shiny slick velour finishes that the Nový Jičín companies produced. For example this 1930s JHS Superior Crystall Velour of mine.

Barn fresh Cavanaugh

I found this gloriously underpriced Cavanaugh today in an antique store. The well worn pinch is off-center, the brim's slightly wonky, the ribbon is stained, and the bow needs a little work. I think I'll keep it as is, it has a lot of character. More pics in the Cavanaugh thread.

When I was in NYC last week, I bid on and won three Borsalinos that seemed to be in very nice condition. The first arrived today - virtually new in it's original box and a fine fit to boot. I hope I'm as lucky with the other 2.

This green Christys Adventurer arrived Wednesday - not stock, the ribbon is dark brown and I had them (Hornet Hats, London - wonderful company by the way) trim the brim to 2.75" front/back. It's normally 3" f/b, 2.5" on the sides. Crown is 5.75"

Color is Elm, which is a dark green, darker than my Bluegrass Green Campdraft. These photos were taken with my phone, and green is hard to capture, but I think they come close to the actual shade.

Felt is very easy to work with - this is after a quick dry bash right out of the box:

I'm very pleased with the way it turned out. From order to receipt took about 5 weeks, $120.00 shipped to the US with customizations done at no extra cost. I swore this would be my last hat, but they have sooooooo many colors that you won't run across in vintage....

The previous owner had padded the sweat with newspaper. A portion of a horoscope with a copyright of 1958 was on the paper. Does this seem correct?
