Four years ago, I received very helpful advice at this site. Since then, I’ve been relatively quiet member. Now I guess I have something to share. This is my brand new customized Hufvud Raven Crown. It’s 50X beaver blend in sable brown with a special shark gill ribbon and binding in colour that goes by the name of “Sudan brown.” That specific colour is also known in the Merriam Webster dictionary and in the Pantone colour space. Its hex code is # ac6c29. I asked Mikael something close to brass or bronze, and Sudan brown was his answer. As so many of you know from your personal experience, sable brown felt is very rich in tones too, and I’m glad I trusted Mikael’s word on the ribbon colour, for otherwise, the result could have looked weird.

The ribbon colour escapes photographing. It often looks grey in photos, while in nature it has an incredibly wide range of different shades, though mostly elegantly matching grey-brown with the felt itself.

I love this particular shark gill ribbon. Mikael said he can do it. Oh yes he could! Isn’t it beautiful, is it!

I could have chosen differently, but this time Mikael won because this particular model called Raven Crown looked so pleasing to my eye.

Very nice! Mikael does wonderful work. He is a true craftsman.

Worth & Worth in a medium dark blue. A generous 6 5/8” open crown and a 3 1/2” wide raw edge brim. I wouldn’t have chose the bow style for this hat, but I’ll leave it alone.

I can say one thing about that bow/ribbon treatment--it has the virtue of being something I've never seen before today. It's interesting, but something I'd have to get used to if it were on a hat I'd bought. But that blue felt! Sufferin' sapphire that's nice Brent, and it looks great on you too!

Hello. Hope you all are having a good day. Here are a few pics of my Stetson Premier Whippet. I put a sloppy diamond type bash in it and lowered the crown a bit. The felt is soft and pliable. No steam necessary.

It's not even the end of April, but already I can see 2022 is the year of the Top Hat; so far at least.

The 5th Topper of the year and probably the best, definitely the most interesting.

A.F. Bodecker (1818-1884), a well known Copenhagen based Swedish hat maker of the 1800s. A contemporary of Francois Petitgas.


The lady I bought it from told me it was bought by her grandfather for his wedding in 1918. Various factors say it's maybe somewhat older than that, but I'm still researching.

A.F. Bodecker learnt his trade throughout Europe, in France and Germany in particular, during the revolutionary years of the mid 1800s.

He finally made his home in Copenhagen and established his shop at this establishment in 1852. It was also the family home for many years. It can't be seen from the photo, but it was and still is a prestigious area of the capital.



The hat was sold and bought in this establishment in Skive, Jutland, the Danish mainland. William Thimm was also a hatmaker. "Bundtmager" means he was trained in felt making.

It has a whopping 16cm crown height. The tallest of all my Top Hats. It's a tight fit, but I just had to have it.

@BobHufford pointed out this brown Cavanagh bowler to me some weeks back. The asking price at the time was more than I was wanting to go. A bit of patience paid off when after a few weeks it hadn’t sold, I sent the seller a modest offer. After a small counter offer the hat was on its way. @steur half jokingly, raised the concern hoping it was in fact brown and not just bad photography. I can happily confirm for Stefan it is indeed brown in color… more so a lighter tobacco brown… or being that the last two letters on the torn price tag are wn.. maybe Fawn? Speaking of the torn price tag it ends in 5.00… I’m guessing maybe original price of $15 on what I’d estimate to be a mid to later 50s Cavanagh that was sold at Meyer’s of Lexington, KY. Sadly the golden size 7 size tag that was shown unattached in the sellers photos did not appear to have made the journey with the hat. This hat makes a fine addition to my derby stable. Hückel Weilheim "Chevreau", 59 cm possibly later 1950s. The Chamois Felt is lighter in weight and easily dry creases. This one has a unique braided Band and unique small feather (probably to match the band).
