This one can be added to the collection thanks to Mark @M Hatman (thanks, Mark!).
Portis New Slant tissue weight in a very nice brown/taupe colour. Size 56 (American 7) with the bound brim at a good 6,5cm and the crown 10cm at the front pinch. I tried to discover what the "new slant" on this hat would be. It came creased with a strong rake front to back, which was not my cup of tea. It took it to open crown and steamed to to see where it would go and this is where I ended up. Not much of a slant to be seen, but a lovely hat anyway. It has lost its liner (there are some glue marks inside under the sweat). The ribbon is what makes the hat stand out.
Apparently a tissue weighs 100 grams (who knew?).

Nice recovery, sir!

Sup fellas, I got the Royal Stetson restored.

You picked up some real classics this time, Stefan. I hope you enjoy them all. Maybe you will get a chance to wear that top hat to one of your many upcoming holiday parties.

Fellow lounger Randy @Rmccamey found this Mallory bowler, but it didn't fit him. He was very kind and generous to send it to me. Even though in theory this would be a size too large for me, it actually fits me like a custom. Wonderful bowler hat.
Mallory cravanette bowler in a size 7 1/8 (57), unlined, with the brim at 5cm and the crown at approx. 12cm. It weighs 131 grams. Thanks Randy!

Superior silk top hat in a size 59 (7 3/8 American). Brim at 5cm and crown 14,5cm. Silk hats in larger size are extremely difficult to find. So if one comes along that is not the price of a second hand car I try to buy it. This one came with the box it was sold in as well.

That went completely over my head, Max. Dr. Seuss never caught on this side of the Atlantic.
I stick with my assessment of green. Greens are difficult to combine with other colours. "Blue and green should never be seen" isn't a saying for nothing. We have a similar saying in Dutch, but it mentions red as the colour not be combined with green. Greens only seem to do well with other greens. So unless you want to be a forester or a leprechaun they are to be avoided;)
They go well with browns. Ask any tree.:)

Oh! And my Mom said she would teach me to read English by reading Green Eggs and Ham. I said readng English was obviously the same as reading Spanish. She handed me the book for me to prove it, I read a couple of lines, and she looked at me curiously. "All right, go play" she said, and never checked my schoolwork again.

Borsalino Faunosca 38 1/2 in averla colour in a size 56 (7 American) qualitá extra superiore. Bound brim with four rows of extra stitching at 6,5cm and crown 10cm at the center dent. Very cool ribbon treatment and a lightweight hat at just 78 grams.
The liner was removed at some point and put back in crooked.

Malloy made a great hat...as well as some not-so-great hats. Yours looks like the former! Good snag!

Ok, thank you for the tip that I may have done well in this grab. Two questions for the experts.

1) what style is it
2) any guess as to the age?

I am attaching the brand name in hope you smart people can tell me. It says it is a “Mallory knockabout”. I have always seen fedora style hats with an edge sewn on them, this does not have one. Just trying to learn.

I can’t tell from your photo, but it looks as if the liner has a 1923 date. That is not the date of the hat, but if it was that date it’s a pre-Stetson buyout and therefore pre-1946. it f it has a 1917 date it is newer and made after Stetson bought them.

The type of brim edge treatment doesn’t not define a fedora. Fedoras can have raw edges, welted edges, bound edges, or felted edges. Is you hat a knockabout or a Nokabout?

Mike,

Here’s the problem with hat taxonomy: we use the same word to describe very different hats. Science would no doubt subdivide hats with such different morphology, but we use “fedora” for most any soft felt hat that isn’t a homburg. In this regard it’s like the use of “sedan” in the cars. Drastically different vehicles use the same style designation:

Both sedans, but not very similar.

You’re off the a great start with that Mallory!

Thanks Bob, I totally forgot to look behind the sweatband. Lo and behold I found several tags. A tag that was stalled to the band gave a date of June 59. So I guess that settles that as far as the date goes. Thank you all for the tips and knowledge.

Stetson Sovereign Twenty Mode Edge. I've been looking for this one for a while. I had a Mode Edge Fifteen some time back that I really liked but it was too small and had to be moved on to another Lounger. This is a very nice Twenty, very clean felt that I would call "crushable", or perhaps plush would be a better term. It is a mid-weight hat but very soft - comparable to my Canadian Stetson Imperial - and dents easily wherever my fingers happen to land when I pick it up. A 2 3/4 Mode Edge brim and a 1 3/4 black ribbon with wind trolley and keyhole size tag. Of all the felts I have seen and handled, this grey has enough blue to keep the blue hue in low light and direct sun. This is the color I think of when someone says, "Steel" - a nice middle grey/blue.

Many thanks for tracking this one down for me goes to my good friend and nominee for the 2020 Fedora Lounge Enabler of the Year award, Randall @Randall Renshaw
