Bravo. That is a very special and unique summer felt.
I love all those venting details.
Have you noticed the difference wearing the hat?
I don't think mine is a summer hat. Also, for some reason, though it is tagged 7 1/8, it fits like 6 7/8.
I've been tempted to tear the Ventino out
so there was room for my head

I realized my post yesterday might have been misunderstood. My opening, about boxes on the porch, was because there were three. I knew there were purchases in transit, and thought my second St. Regis Homburg might arrive yesterday. When I saw the condition of the one box, my heart sank, partly out of fear for the light Homburg. Another box was much smaller (it was a 6 7/8 hat stretcher), and the final box was rough and looked like a lot of hats had been shipped in it, based on hat names scrawled on it. Somebody also had "very fragile" (good) and "rare" (too much like 'steal me'). It was by no means pristine, but nothing like that first one.
The crushed box contained a crushed hat, one flattened side to side instead of top to bottom. It's a 4X Stetson silverbelly that I only bid on because no one else had. It was ab out to close unsold for $19.99 and $10 shipping, I guess because it's a 6 7/8. I figured it was worth considerably more as a hat body, if nothing else. When I saw that's what was in the crushed box I was relieved. I meant to, but see didn't, show another picture of it after I quickly dry shaped it and did away with most of the evidence it was in that box.
The St. Regis was in the third box, which is like a file box, with a lid. One end was caved in a little bit, and in some mysterious way the crown was caved in a, which surprised me because the seller packed it in aq cardboard ring with little air bags around it.
All of the transit damage came out easily, from both hats. The Silver Belly unfortunately has some pretty significant moth burrows, all on the front, but I'm extremely happy with the light grey Homburg. A trip to the "gas station" will certainly make it one of my most prized hats. I'm not sure how someone who obviously otherwise took such good care of it let it get so dirty.
The hat came from Marshal Fields, so maybe the owner lived near the steel mills on the South Side.
