Well if you don't like it I would love to have it, even though 200 is above my budget. ;) But I would say yep that is a great hat Max. Looks new. The sweatband looks perfect. The ribbon is in great condition and for me the 3.5 inch brim is perfect. Looks to me just like the one I posted above made i believe in the 50's. From what I have read, that particular inventory tag was used by Stetson from the late 30's to the late 50's. So you have a great vintage hat. I have two Nutrias now. Both crowns are easily shaped without steam, but one hat has a very stiff brim while the other, the black hat above has a less stiff brim. Much nicer, so they can differ but the Nutria felt is terrific in my opinion although I am certainly no expert. I love your hat.
Thank you! That makes me feel good. [emoji5]

Dr Max, Nutria makes for a great felt. This is most likely a 40s hat (maybe early 50s) - red single block inventory tag and stars on the sweatband crest. I have one nutria myself and really enjoy it.

Generally speaking, the Nutria hats floated around the price of a 3X. You can find it here on the Miller Stockman catalog Hatman loaded up:

https://www.thefedoralounge.com/thr...g-and-ephemera-of-the-golden-era.92141/page-8

Going back farther you can find Clear Nutria Quality at a pretty high price, from what I read the felt was a favorite because it a fine quality and withstands the elements.

Just arrived from Copenhagen. Hornskov clearance sale and an impulse buy during a bout of insomnia. I wasn’t exactly sure what I would actually receive, but this 50% Beaver hat is exactly what I was hoping for:

Wild and weird and spectacular!

A little big and the sweatband needs a little padding.

Is it supposed to have a liner, and it doesn't have one?

Is this hat I bought any good? I know nothing about Westerns (not that I know an awful lot about fedoras).
Bowen and others are often awwing about Nutrias. I Stetson on the sweat, the listing says "Nutria", it costs 200, it's my size, I buy it, but I don't really know...
The listing said "Vintage Early Syetson Nutria". Help me out, please?

As a friend i say “Buy it...buy it now!! Do not hesitate. Stop all activity and...buy it now”!!!
As a competitor i say “under no circumstance is that hat worth a penny”!
If the brim was a smidge less wide...i’d snipe you in a second!
So...hurry. Lol

Quite a few I am seeing do not have liners. I am a fan of variations on the stitched liner. Also, after reading more it looks like the sweatbands with stars stuck around through the early fifties on these models; as with several other models there is a bit of overlap between stars on the sweat through later years (the 100s sweatbands being the most noted example).

https://www.thefedoralounge.com/threads/the-official-stetson-nutria-quality-thread.55014/

Picky point: The one thing that bugs me on this one...the sweatband crest is planted over the top inner line on the sweatband. I don’t think hat crests from the 40s were stamped like that.

The big thing I like about the hat and worth raving about: that’s a BIG hat with weight and character. It’s a great catch.

Daniel

I already had bought it, B. I had just forgotten to post it in this thread.
I bought it quickly, before anyone else got it.
Otherwise, I would have asked for your opinion before I bought it, as usual.

Well...the new resistol 3x came in today. I love it already!
The quality of this hat is Waaaaaaaay better than my wool one...and it fits like a friggin condom on my head!
A hurricane won't blow this hat off, but it doesn't cut off my circulation in my head! It's so amazingly comfortable!
(I'm wondering how I'm going to get a cloth cover over the sweatband now)
First night with it...I flattened the brim and tried to telescope it...still not quite right.
The previous cattleman creasing is proving to be a beast to get rid of...especially with the center of the crown.
Friggin square in the center of a circle...what the hell kinda wackiness is that!?!?
I think I rolled it so much I wore off some of the beaver felt.
:(
You can see it pilling on the hat in the pics below...hope I didn't ruin it before I even get to wear it.
My rotten luck...

Well, Here's what it looked like before...

Nice job on the re-crease. Very impressive Resistol. Love that corded hat band. Is it a red liner?

New hat, couldn't resist a low BIN. Late 1950s/early 60s Dobbs Game Bird. I'm not sure how long this model remained in the catalog for Dobbs, but this one has all the features. Nice deep brown heather felt, substantial sweat band leather, and the slanted Dobbs stamping. Cool WAR. The mfg tag does not have a block designation and the liner is glued. Not being adverse to a stingy 2" brim, this one will be a grab and go. Now I have a Rainbow and a Bird from the same era. Wish I could come up with an early one!

Wow! So nice! Really great pork pies seem a little evasive lately.

Thanks for the comment on the Hornskov. It’s pretty delightful. The felt has a great hand, really well done. I’m guessing that this one may have been an early work because there are some spots where if you look closely you can see some botching from either pouncing or ironing. Pretty subtle though, and I think a perfect candidate for their clearance/shop moving sale. Totally worth it!

Hear no evil.....see no evil........hear no evil......see no evil.....;)
Glad you changed your mind. Up-sizing two sizes would definitely change this awesome hat too much....
But of course can anyone any more even wear a 6 3/4???????? Museum piece to be sure.
Take care....
M;)
PS Did you get the Marathon yet???
I have now! And it's a belter!! The Portis sits there proudly in the display cabinet; awesome hat. Who knows who might come along with a tiny head-size.

I think you're well on your way with that crease. I wouldn't worry about the felt; looks like you have some leeway before it would become a problem. Keep at it with steam and elbow grease and you'll get there. I like that new crease.
