Miller. I asked Ignacio to curl it. The brim edge was frayed, so he had to trim it a little. I really like how it turned out. Ignacio says it is really old. I wonder how much?.

The first of a few new ones.
Echter Mayser in light grey. Qualität Flaum (which would translate as peach-finish, which is exactly what the felt feels like). Size 60, with the bound brim at a good 6,5cm and the crown 11cm at the pinch. Unusual find in this size. Specially made for A. Breiter, München.

Another find this friday. Quite unusual to find American made hats this side of the pond and most Stetsons I see were made under license, either in Germany or in England. Not this one.
Stetson St. Regis in black. Royal Stetson (as most of the St Regis models are) in a size 7 3/8 (way too big for me). Brim sits at 6cm and the crown 11cm at the front. PM me if you're interested. Still has the price tag inside; $ 13,50. My guess off the cuff is late forties, early fifties.

I once received a Panizza hat like this one from @Daniele Tanto. Gorgeous hat, but unfortunately too large for me so I traded it with @moehawk. Never found another Panizza that could compare to that original one. Until yesterday, when I found this one:
Super Panizza in what I'm guessing is a size 57 (it's slightly large for me). Raw edge brim at 5,5cm and crown 10,5 at the pinch. It does have the issue that the sweatband is coming away from the reed, but that is only because of poor stitching thread; the sweatband itself is fine. Had to have it regardless.

Last one is the best one. This one I bought at an auction thinking it would be a very old German made hat. Let's start off with some of the auction shots.

Hat, sweatband, liner look old and it comes in a box, which i know is not original to the hat, bit still has a newspaper in it dating back to 1909. For just shy of $25 including shipping, what's not to like. Didn't even bother to ask what size the hat was.
The hat arrives and unpacking I am pleasantly surprised by the feel of the felt. The brim is all wonky because of the hat sitting in a wrong box for decades, but that will probably steam out.
Under the sweat could be the answer to who made this mystery hat. And there I find this:

borsalino elegant_10.jpg

Interesting to say the least. This label with the separate size label places this somewhere in the thirties (according to the sketchy Borsalino lore). OK, so a thirties Borsalino with a replacement sweatband and liner in an older box. Very nice. There's more to this hat than that however. First some shots to fill up this first installment.
The size is 57 (5) and the model name is "Natalsti" (if I'm reading it correctly). Brim is a generous 7,5cm and the crown measures 10,5cm at the pinch.
Stay tuned for part 2.

Part 2
A very cool Borsalino with a replaced sweatband and liner. I usually look into the retailer of the hats I find and more often than not there's nothing to be found. Not so in this case.
Carl Freindrich Hermann Haugk was located in Dresden, Pragerstrasse 37 (Europahof) and that turned up this place on the interweb.
Altstadt-Dresden-Strassenpartie-Hotel-Europaeischer-Hof-Prager-Strasse-1902.jpg

And there's even a litho of the Haugk factory (in 1857):
LEIPZIG-Haucks-Hutfabrik-kolorierte-Lithographie-1857.jpg

However Haugk was only located on the Pragerstrasse 37 address until 1906, after which date the address is occupied by Johannes Kupke. These are publications dated 1916 and 1926 respectively:

kupke 1926.jpg

Haugk still is located in Dresden after 1906, but on a different address:

haugk2.jpg

The King of Saxony (Freidrich August III) abdicated in 1918 after the Russion octoberrevolution, so Haugk was on that address before 1918, which is consistent with the Kupke information.
This doesn't make sense of course; a thirties hat with a 1906 replacement sweatband. Maybe the seller can tell me more. And he can. To his knowledge the hat in fact belonged to this man (picture belongs to seller):
fritz otto von sauerstein.jpg

Fritz Otto Sauerstein, 1893-1968, painter and member of the Kulturkammer in WWII. He was living in Dresden from 1922 onwards. According to the seller he is wearing the hat in this picture, which I don't think is right (the brim seems too narrow and there's more taper to the crown in the picture).
Everything adds up, except the address on the sweatband. As far as I can figure out, it might well be possible that the sweatband was replaced with one from an older (unsold) hat. How cool is that?

Excellent hauls, drmax and steur!

I didn’t find anything quite so exquisite, but this Stetson Royal DeLuxe has a ton of character and was well taken care of. Fully intact and dusted just right.

I find its color to be unusually warm, more yellow than others I’ve seen. It is not an Open Road, because of the three ply ribbon. Fits like a glove though. Except I don’t have any gloves that fit so well.

Ok so here goes.. I am a bit rusty as to where I’m really suppose to show my new acquisition, but I hope this will be a kewl story

So I want to start working again outside in the Phoenix sun and I’m not comfortable with large brims even though they are pretty much the smart move here in this city

I found a great hat. Craigslist no less right? Turns out this hat was this mans fathers hat. Although I traveled about 15 miles I actually paid almost nothing for it
(15.00)

So here’s the hat and what I found out from Az-Tex hats... I’ve been there many times since the mid ‘90’s and it owned by the same family for generations

1.hat was Sold at Diamonds here in Phoenix Az turn out they were bought out by Dillard’s in late 1960’s

2. The headband inside actually has its own “liner” which I was told they don’t do for a while and haven’t for a while

3. The Stetson horse and rider are embroidered

4. The price tag and the model number and name of store are still in the hat
For 20.00 back then!

5. Block tag is still intact

6. I’m not sure why but no open road stamp but the crown is almost 5” and the brim is almost 3” but it quite probably 2 7/8th

7. No wind trolley but Etsy has them if you look... ok it’s not silverbelly trolly but olive and I like the contrast

8. There is a stamped number in the band identified to the re-order number

So that’s about the only provenance I have of the history ...diamonds and the sales tag but unfortunately not receipt.

Forgot the mention it’s knotted at the end of the box tails... been told they use to hand tie them... that’s not done anymore.

This is my best find yet still looking
I found another as mentioned in another post... it’s stamped open road and Stetson but it’s a akubra and I’m not sure much about it except the images are posted. Pm me if you know some history for it thanks
