C. W. Borchert Berlin W., 58cm, 145 grams possibly late 1920s early 1930s. This Stiff Felt is from the same seller + original owner of the P. & C. Habig Wien "Special", P. & C. Habig's "Special Qualität" Reine Handarbeit Berlin Friedrichstr. 82a Soft Felt. I know Rehfus & Cie. Kehl a. Rhein was a supplier for C. W. Borchert Berlin W so could have been made by them. It has some C. G. Wilke characteristics so they could also be a possible source. The overall quality is very high and it wears comfortably.

According to this 1913 ad Rehfus & Cie (Kehl a. Rhein) made hats under the Borchert Marke.

Another beautiful stiff felt Steve. I like the shape of that crown. The history you provide on these hats is always a treat.

Not exactly new as this hat has been sitting around for several weeks, but finally got around to cleaning it since I received a hat brush for Christmas. A late 50s Dobbs meant to be a foul weather beater to go with my trench coat. A bit dirty, wonky bash, several moth nibbles, and a worn liner...it's got character:

Played around with the bash some more after the pics. Still trying to find what it wants as that previous bash was pretty haphazard.

This indoor lighting is also driving me crazy. Seller called it gray. I'm seeing more of a brownish hue, although not as pronounced as what my after pics show. Somewhere in between is probably most accurate.

That cleaned up VERY nicely.
Yeah, that's definitely brown...
Maybe the seller thought it as gray from all of the dust that was in the felt, lol.

Brass Rooster's Vintage 125 are made from 1950s felts. You choose the style, the ribbons, the bindings. When I chose "silver" for my taupe 125, John was all for it. Never occurred to him. He and I have fun with colors.

As for the shape... in general, I prefer a teardrop-to-C crown. The felt comes off of the block however it comes off. You don't impose a shape on it so much as cooperate with it until you get a result that looks good and is reasonably symmetrical.

John has pointed out, when I was in his store, how I am one of the few people he trusts to shape a hat and not have to ask for help.

You can't buy that kind of trust. I trust him to make it as best he can and he trusts me to shape it as best I can. The taupe one, I admit is my second try. The first time was close... but not right. John reblocked it open and the second try was right.

P. & C. Habig Wien "Special Qualität", 57cm possibly late 1920s very early 1930s. The medium weight felt is really fantastic and easily dry creases. I have no information on H. Peter but I am checking.
