I've never been one for bowlers because I'm pretty sure I'd look ridiculous in one, but if I were ever to get one for myself I'd want it to look exactly like this because it ticks off all the right boxes for me. Stunning!

You let Looking ridiculous stop you from wearing something? Weird.

Yeah, like that would be a first for me.

I bought this Hardeman hat a couple of months ago, and I already posted it once, but it was very dusty and dirty. It was the main reason I kept asking about hat cleaning in the "Ask a Question" thread.
I immersed it overnight in what they call "gas nafta" in Mexico once, then in "gasolina blanca" twice. Blobs of what I think was grease and dirt sunk to the bottom of the container each time.
However, the yellow stains in the brim binding and ribbon did not clean completely, even when I rubbed them with a tooth brush while inside the gas bath.
My wife gave me a German cleaning product she said was meant to clean away sweat stains, and I brushed the ribbon and binding the same way. The sweat stains were less evident, but remained.
Finally, I took the Hardeman to Ignacio, my new-found hatter in Mexico City, and asked him to replace the ribbon, and resigned myself to keeping the stained binding. I also asked him to reblock the hat to my size.
He just smiled, searched for a plastic bottle with a clear liquid for a minute, counted fifteen drops which he put in some water, dropped the ribbon inside, brushed the binding with the solution, blocked my hat, added a bit of leather to the sweat, put it on the conformer, removed the plastic cover from the liner, and sewed everything back together.
When he gave it back to me, the stains were gone, the liner looked great, almost like new, and the hat fit perfectly.
Here are some pics of what I feel is my new custom vintage Hardeman.

Gracias, Douglas. I really worked on this one. Right now I feel I have to work on spiffing up the hats I have, before acquiring others. Otherwise, I will just have a bunch of old, ill-fitting, half-forgotten hats laying around.
I am very glad I found Ignacio. He and his little shop, "Sombrerería Escandón", have been portrayed in Mexican magazines and on T.V. as the last of a dying breed.

Turned out great Max. It is good to have a Hatter you can rely on. I am so happy to have Mike Miller just a short drive south when ever I need something.

Barbisio that came my way via a trade with Stefan @steur
It has dense thin felt and while it’s a bit smaller of brim than I normally prefer it’s a nice addition to my collection and my first Barbisio. Thank you Stefan!

I gave it a simple center dent crease and found the felt malleable and willing to take any shape.

Good to see it made the journey across the pond, Brent. I think it looks good on you. These shorter brims need a wee bit of getting used to.

First of four that arrived today. Dunn & Co. bowler in gray. I have been wanting a different colored stiff felt for a while now. Stefan found this one over there. It is a modern incarnation (unsure about the age) but quality is high. This one will need some stretching up to my size. There is no store logo on the sweat which looks new. I do love the lines of this one, tight curl and a substantial crown. Once it conforms to my noggin better, it will be getting some serious head time. I do wear my stiff felts on a regular basis.

Hat 2 (in no particular order, just processing images as I go). Lodenfrey Lord's Hat made by P&C Habig late 1950s/early 1960s. Felt on this one is incredible, soft and inky black. I still need to spend some quality time with the steamer on this one. The unbound edge in a shallow homburg curl is quite interesting. It is not quite a Homburg yet not quite a Lord's Hat. Just one cool black hat! Included are a couple of Stefan's images for better detail.

Number 3, even though summer is slipping away, a new straw graced my door. This Mayser Panama is going to be a hot day grab and go. Nice brim width, ventilation and a nice weave. The ribbon is what draws me to this Panama, too nice to hide under a pug. The sweat is cloth, which is quite comfortable, this one fits like a dream. It is going to be in the 80s next week, so it will see some sun before winter slumber.

View attachment 136653 View attachment 136654 View attachment 136655 View attachment 136656 View attachment 136657 The final hat is a Barbisio in Brera. No model name, kind of taper to the crown but wow! The felt is incredible on this one, kind of soft and floppy, but should hold shape with some steam. Looks like it wants a center dent, I'll try to coax a diamond into this crown. Wider brim at 2.5", crown just over 4 1/2" This hat like most Italians is kind of on the small side of 58cm, I have the hat under a little pressure to cure this. This one will be another grab and go due to it's lines and numbers.
The hat culture exchange program is in full swing. Good to see they arrived safely. Hope the small running bowler will work out. The Lodenfrey is a special shape. Habig did that on their own hats too, because I have one of theirs shaped just like it. I keep it like that because I have plenty of black fedoras and homburgs so I don't need to give it another shape (and it looks quite cool actually).

Nice buy Red. Stefan is a great hat finder and one of my favourite hat pushers [emoji4]. Looking forward to receiving a hat consignment from him this coming week. Cudos to you for wearing your stiff felts (bowlers) outdoors. I get strange looks just wearing a Homburg. I'm going to go out and wear my Bowlers with pride this year.

I'll put my felt nose to work the coming week. See what's in the stores for the coming season.

It looks great, Max. I really like that felt. The question of course is: what was that liquid?

He says it is very important to put only about 15 drops per 250 ml, or it will "burn" the ribbon, but I imagine one could experiment on the concentration with discarded ribbon pieces

The indoor lighting really brings out the green in the felt. In actuality, the color is brown with green undertones...pecan ;)

I knew that club tie would come in handy! Must give that a try sometime; these ribbon stains are a pain in the.. errrm... neck to get out. Thanks, Max!
