Greetings All:
Interesting question by Stefan about how the Nutria felt of your homburg compares Brent.
If i may chime in. I don’t have all that many Nutria hats but those i do are totally different styles. I have a couple Stetson Smokies, literally stiff as a board, a couple Stetson Western OR styles, thick but less stiff and a Borsalino fedora which is thin soft and dreamy felt. Therefore, hard to compare based just on felt type. I know there is a Stetson Nutria thread but i wonder if there might be interest in a dedicated “Nutria Hats” thread?? Or enough hats out there to support it. Could be interesting.
Be well. Bowen
Ps: some nice new hats of late all.
Nutria is extremely rare on this side of the pond and judging from what I see on the lounge, there's not an abundance on the other side as well. The ones I own are different from other felts, but maybe that's a biased viewpoint, knowing that they are nutria. Other felt mixes are not always advertised. Hare for example was widely used, but not marketed as anything special. Even beaver hats were not always advertised as such. Would be interesting to see a thread on felt types, but there are many variables and not all mixes are clear. The possibilities were and are endless: rabbit, hare, beaver, nutria, wool, cashmere, chincilla and what not. But having said that: it would be difficult to pinpoint examples and because of the variables difficult to compare.

Hat #2 from @NewJack

Lagomarsino Black Nutria Homburg

This is a hat I’ve been looking at for the better part of a year. Originally, I saw it for sale by yet another Lounge member, but I just couldn’t pull the trigger. NewJack ended up with it and made me a great deal.

The felt is soft and luxurious and with just a bit of coaxing it should fit fine.

Nice one Brent, I like the lines of this one. Kind of agree with Stefan, it is unique. I like the brim configuration.

I'm not sure if I already posted this in "new hats" before. I am noveau riche in hats, thanks to Anthony, and I can't remember for sure.
Anyway, this pre-1946 merger Mallory Premier is immaculate, including the lining.
It was a little tight at first, but it fits well now.

Pristine Max. Damn, what a hat.

I do see what you mean. It’s hard to keep it to just one variable.

I hear news stories of how nutria, as an invasive species, have caused lots of ecological problems and how hard they are to control as they reproduce quickly and adapt to many environments. It all makes me wonder why there isn’t more use of these nuisance animals. I’d love to see hatters offer nutria felts.
They are all over the place here in the Willamette Valley. They look like giant rats! Sure make a nice hat though.

I've been meaning to ask you, Max. Why are all your pictures backwards?
There is a setting on my phone to take selfies so they appear either way.
Bingo. It depends on what you're using to take the photos, and the software on the device and it's capabilities/settings. In order to take a "selfie" with my cell phone I have two options. Option one is to turn the phone around with the screen facing away from me, and hope for the best because I can't see whether or not my ugly mug is centered in the frame. Option two is to use the "switch" option (as it's referred to on my phone) and take the photo with the screen facing me so I can see how it's framed, but this option "flops" the image and the results are mirrored like Dr. Max's. The software on my phone isn't sophisticated enough to correct this, so I have to upload the photo from my phone to my laptop and use Photoshop to flop the image again to it's proper orientation. Since my phone takes poor photos even under the best of circumstances and I have to do this anyway, I just use an actual camera.

My wife bought me a selfie stick for Christmas. I only use it around the house. Don't want to look like a Chinese tourist with it in public. I can use the front camera with the blue tooth trigger. I usually post process my selfies and crop and swap horizontally if needed. I'm a dork. A constant source of amusement to my wife...

I understand. I had decided a long time ago to not use the switch option because the quality of the pictures is significantly worse than the forward facing lens. That's one reason I use my bathroom when taking head shots of my hats - so that I can see the reflection of the phone screen in the mirror and get myself more or less centered in the frame.

This came to me courtesy of @NewJack:

Stemwinder Custom Hats 100X...lords hat?

The felt is western stiff, but the hand is incredibly soft and the condition is immaculate. When I first put it on my heart sank as it was way too small. I turned the sweat out looking for tags and found a felt reducer pad and weather stripping fore and aft. With the reducers removed the hat fit great! I thought the felt was Silverbelly but upon seeing it in person it looks more bone. Fine by me. It’s a great hat! Thanks Doc!

Now! This one is you, Brent!! Simply wunnerful! Yes. I'd added some stuff under sweat as it was a bit roomy! I forgot to remove them before sending! Oh well! It fits! Looks great!
and happy you're happy!

Borsalino Traveller in green. Size 60 cm. It is a modern Borsalino, around nineties
2eehsg9.jpg

The felt is mix of fur and woll and is very soft, the surface has a gentle touch with some short hair
23jn8gj.jpg

It was the Borsalino to travel, so you can crush as you want. Not my opinion, neither my aim:rolleyes:
The best is to give it a shape and then let it "rest"
11t0q4i.jpg

Proportions are: Stitched brim at 6.5 cm. crown at 11 cm. and the contrasting ribbon is 3 cm.
xfbuxg.jpg

Unlined with sweatband made of grosgrain as in the tradition of this type of Borsalino
It arrived used in good-excellent conditions

It took me sometimes to finally have this Flechet ready.
2mebs0j.jpg

This came, old-new stock from the Strasbourg "A. Meer" hats shop field. The felt is heather astounding color, between various greys and black
29q0bki.jpg

I almost forget it, because it was sized as 60 cm. but it was really wide and remained some years sit back in the closet
thinking I have to find the right hatter to dimension it for my head.
sdjtag.jpg

Fleur of Penumbra hats in Netherland made an excellent job and now the hat fits well with a slightly new shape
iymn1s.jpg

Flechet in dark heather grey. Unlined and with a overseams brim at 5.5cm and crown at 11.5cm at the pinch, ribbon is 3.5 cm. with a lovely bow.
w1pw92.jpg

Lovely medium weight felt hat ready for the autumn
