I saw this sitting in ebay and just picked it up. I figured it was too small, and it is, but it's also a bit of a mystery. Under the sweat is some repair work done with - that's right - duct tape. There's a Stetson 7-1/4 size tag, but also some stickers that say 60, then 59. I think 58 or 57 is more correct.

It's beautiful stuff, this parabuntal straw. Very light.

Is it flexible if steamed or soaked in water and then reblocked, or no?

It may just end up being another hat for the lovely MrsFed.... arg!

Nice Parabuntal! They soften up nicely when misted with water from a spray bottle. Too bad it's not your size.
Picked up this Solar Straw at the city run rummage sale today.

You come up with the coolest old hats! I view your posts with a mixture of happiness for your luck and plain jealousy.
What keeps me from going full green-eyed envy mode is that most of the ones you post are way too little for me.:)

Ignore my questions in the other thread. I'm in love with this Grand Central, especially with the wider brim. I like the center dent in this light (bone?) color. Very nice finish on both hats. Impressive.
It is actually more of a light tan.....photographs lighter, but it also looks different depending on the light and what it is next to.
The color is different and MUCH more even and clean than their usual silver-belly. It is NOT all powdered either.....really soft really nice I am very pleased with this one and it got a lot of compliments when worn........plus those.."that is cool" looks....or "what a dork"...I am not sure.....I will imagine the former!!! ;)
As a side note, apparently I got a "one off" with the brim width and crown ribbon. Another lounger posted his with a 1 3/4 inch ribbon and the 2 3/8 brim....great color was the same......not sure about crown height.....I think I would be just as pleased with the shorter brim and ribbon as this color and felt is just sooooooo nice.....the other hat is posted in "WHYWT" thread and shows off a different bash, and it looks great too!!!!!
M
PS I usually get good compliments on my hats (and dress) by both men and women....but the women (all ages), I must say, seem to especially take notice......for an old fat guy.....that is pretty good!!!!!!!

Thanks Moe. A couple of hours of web searching left me no closer to the answer of what exactly Hopoka is.

Another great green hat you have added to your collection today as well. I remember seeing that one listed.

Thanks,
Michael

From what I have read it is essentially South American Alpaca fur. Hopoka is the native ancestral name for the mountain Lama's that the Alpaca is descendant from. It does make sense them trying to mix this fine fur in with the normal Coney and Beaver......much like the mixtures with Mink and others.

Leopold Dermotta Wien, 59cm probably early to mid 1950s. Leopold Dermotta Wien hats are hard to find. I have only come across post WWII Homburg style hats in my size range and they are all very high quality. I really like the high side dents this one came with and it's in very good condition.

Just got these two.....VERY pleased with both!
First the Stetson "Grand Central"...VERY NICE, great color....very soft supple felt. Comes open crown.....the proportions of mine are different than advertised and even those printed on the box. Mine has a little over 2 1/2 inch brim as apposed to the 2 3/8 advertised and I like it! Crown is also taller than 5 1/2 inches.....almost as tall as the Stetsonian! Again, really nice soft supple felt throughout!!!!! The under-welt brim is very well executed! I immediately put in a nice deep center dent and it does NOT come close to touching my head! AND I have not added any pinches as I like the look with the dent only a lot! With the tall crown it kind of gives it a 1920's early 30's sort of feel. Looks great brim up or down. Wore it yesterday and got a lot of compliments......

Here it is as I creased it...

AND I also purchased one of those Hemp Whippets......And it was quite comfortable and good for the warmer afternoon!! The proportions are different than the felt variety....it has a 2 1/2 in brim and the crown is taller.....all in all really nice looking hat.

I am VERY PLEASED with BOTH!!!!
Cheers,

I like the storyline, but this hat is straw, of one form or another. I've often wondered what sort of quality of hat alpaca or llama or vicuna would make. Or musk oxen.

Thanks,
Michael

Yes......sorry about that......I was skipping around and lost track of who posted what...
I was actually reading about the fur mix question someone recently posted on a Churchill they were asking about.......that is the one with the Alpaca Fur aparently in the blend........I have no clue as to the referance for your straw......:(
You sure do find some nice hats out there though......and you have a great color mix with your OR collection!
Take care,
M

I think I rather like this whim buy.
That is really cool!! While I have long and short hair finish on a few Homburgs and a couple of other hats.....(and I do like them a lot) ....I feel that finish really looks best on a western.........

Super find! It looks fantastic! Can you tell me what is says on the left side of the paper label ("Flaum")? If possible can you take a full photo of the label? My guess is mid 1950s. I downloaded the photos to my Flicker account posted them below. Can you post these on the German - Austrian thread?
