Hey all!
I went back to the thrift store where I bought that G1 to see if the detachable collar had been donated with it. I spoke to the manager, who told me she'd ask the folks who were sorting when it came in. She also invited me to look around the sorting area in case it was sitting in a "what the heck is this" pile. Didn't see it, but I did spot a pair of hats, nearly identical, and had to check them out. A Pilgrim and a Brent, both in near minty condition. Asked for dibs when they were priced. She said make an offer. I offered 40 bucks for the pair, expecting a counter offer. She just said Deal!

Here's the Brent.

The crown is 5" open, brim 2 5/8". Band is 1" , bound in 1/4" ribbon. 125g total weight.
I know I'm not the best at dating hats, but I'll venture a guess of mid 50's. Any input always welcome!

Here's the Pilgrim.

The crown on this one is 5 1/4" open, brim is 2 5/8". 1" band, 1/4" binding. 130g, fake wind trolley, onionskin liner tip protector. My age guess is the same as the Brent, mid 50's.
Here's the two side by side, Brent on the left.

Too bad there wasn't a Marathon there too...this guy liked Sears and Montgomery Ward, why not J.C. Penney's?

They sure look like they came from the same guy, he had a thing for nice grey hats. You don't need two that look the same, send one to me, I don't care which one. More balance in your collection you know!!

I had wondered about the quality of the hats sold by Montgomery Ward and Sears. Not sure who made 'em, but the felt is nice and workmanship is good. Seems like they may be from the same maker except for the factory tags...

They sure look like they came from the same guy, he had a thing for nice grey hats. You don't need two that look the same, send one to me, I don't care which one. More balance in your collection you know!!

Well, I'm going to change one to a wide ribbon. Found a couple yards of 1 5/8" black vintage grosgrain that should look great with the contrast of the thin binding. Might try to copy the bow work on my 20's Marathon, or try a shark gill.

Not 100%, but I think those would be Lee hats. The Perfesser would know more.

The arrow in the logo on the Sears looks similar to one used on this Resistol made for Montgomery Ward. Could just be a coincidence ...

Good catch! Lee and Byer-Rolnick were two of the largest store brand manufacturers back in the day.

Don't know how I missed it earlier, but the Brent has an unreeded sweatband. That and the lack of a liner tip protector might make me reconsider the date to a bit earlier.

The felt has a great color and shine to it and can be modeled into any shape. Also I really interesting light weight liner. This is one of four hats that I recently found from the same source.

This is my first serious Fedora. Before this, I had a couple $15-20 Trilby style hats that I made part of my daily wardrobe and had erroneously described them as "Fedoras". When my girlfriend bought me a gift certificate to the local hat shop here in Seattle, I got some good education and walked away with a decent entry into the world of nice 'lids' (I'm going to need to practice with this term). I suspect that this will not be my last post on this thread as I already have my eye on two more hats.

Another interesting hat Steve! The lacing all around the sweat is a neat feature. How can you tell about a wool/fur blend?
