I'm not sure on the rarity, though I didn't find many pictures on the web of one like it.
Those crocheted hatbands were used by Stetson & Resistol on their western hats thru the 1970's but were quickly replaced in the early 1980's by the chicken feather hatbands made popular when the movie Urban Cowboy came out in 1980. If you were lookin' for love in all the wrong places you had to have chicken feathers.

Ha ha, I got a Stagecoach yesterday with a chicken feather boa. Might even have been some pheasant in it. Damn thing bled all over the hat and I had a heck of a time brushing it off. I haven't gotten around to taking photos of the Stagecoach yet, maybe later today. If the gale force winds go down.

Indeed I did Michael. I bought it on clearance at a local western store when I was in high school. I remember how stoked I was to have a real Stetson on a teenage burger flipper's wages.

Nice. Got any photos? Old polaroids you could scan. Ha ha. Early 80s clearance and the band would seem to support the 70s dating then?

Most do have pheasant & prairie chicken feathers. I had one that also had bits of squirrel fur & a talon or two from something.

Yuck. Got rid of almost all feathers from my hats.

Yes & I hate those crocheted bands too. Nothing dates the look of a hat more.
I avoid them but there are some I can't... don't want to change my Stagecoach hats.

I don't mind being dated to the 70s. Livin' was easy and I was young. I didn't wear hats until the end of that decade and then it was a long hair fedora that I cadged out of some dead guys cache. I was just wondering the other day what became of that hat, or even for sure the brand.

Hmm, I probably don't want to examine the remains too closely then. And speaking of oddities, I saw a lamp today made out of two caribou hooves.

A Resistol Stagecoach that also came yesterday.

Feathers gone and replaced for now with horse tail.

Too stingy for Joao at 3 5/8". Crown stands 5 1/2" in the front and 4 1/2" in the back as it's currently bent. A whim purchase at a moment of low resistance. Ha ha. Pretty much original condition, including the pinhole in the front where they had sewed the feathers on. Not sure what I have in mind for this.

Nothing like a new hat to get you out of bed and feeling better! I do like the color. I would probably convert it to a fedora style, probably a Sacrilege.

I wish I had a Resistol Stagecoach catalog.
I've been searching ebay for the model names and numbers of the Stagecoach hats.
Some model names are on the Western Ranch Outfitters catalogs that carouselvic have scanned. From them I learned some model names and original price of some of my hats.

Hey all!
I went back to the thrift store where I bought that G1 to see if the detachable collar had been donated with it. I spoke to the manager, who told me she'd ask the folks who were sorting when it came in. She also invited me to look around the sorting area in case it was sitting in a "what the heck is this" pile. Didn't see it, but I did spot a pair of hats, nearly identical, and had to check them out. A Pilgrim and a Brent, both in near minty condition. Asked for dibs when they were priced. She said make an offer. I offered 40 bucks for the pair, expecting a counter offer. She just said Deal!

Here's the Brent.

The crown is 5" open, brim 2 5/8". Band is 1" , bound in 1/4" ribbon. 125g total weight.
I know I'm not the best at dating hats, but I'll venture a guess of mid 50's. Any input always welcome!
Now to get pics of the Pilgrim.
