Astor

Not sure of the age of this Astor but I'm thinking the 20s. It has a 2" raw edge brim and a 5 1/2" open crown which is wrapped in a 2" grosgrain ribbon with frayed bow. The dark brown leather sweatband is unreeded and the back seam is tightly stitched and not taped. The crown tip is a bit hard to read but it says, "Astor Hats of Distinction." The sweatband is stamped "H. W. Ramsey, Buffalo, KY. Maybe someone on the lounge has some knowlege of Astor hats and when this one was likely made.

Made a deal with ebay seller after major condition issues cancelled our transaction. I know this is not in great condition but was hard to pass up for the price they asked for. Tim AKA the Cane Rod Maker is sending me thin ribbon and going to coach me on how to replace this stained ribbon....should be interesting. Can you guys help date the hat?

Most likely 1950s. The manufacturing label behind the sweatband will provide the best method of dialing the date in more closely. I am guessing the model is Natalsca. Shame that the edge binding will need to be replaced - this is one of Borsalino's more sublime ribbon finishes.

Alan, you can tell it was once a beautiful hat sadly the seller had the condition totally wrong in the first posting. They were up-front and offered it for little more than shipping costs so I took a flier. I hope I am not destroying the hat further by changing the ribbon but I thought since it was stained and was cheap it wouldn't hurt to try.

The felt should be of nice quality. You could consider sending out for treatment though it will add to the cost. I don't think the brim edge treatment can be replaced in this style, but a standard brim edge binding and new ribbon/bow should help give the hat new life. Good luck!

if my little experiment adding a TR to it doesn't work I will just send it to Black Sheep and get a Ostrich sweat and the works done to the hat. Like I said I paid nearly nothing so anything I put into it to make it shine would be worth it.

I recognize that borso as the one I returned as the seller wasn't up front about the condition issues.
Good luck on that one
