Vintage Cavanagh

My new Vintage Cavanagh finally came it. I tried to dry bash it, but it kept popping back to its old open crown position. This is my first attempt at using steam so any comments or suggestion for the newbie is much appreciated.
Here's the link to the pictures which include the original open crown photos.

BTW, funny thing is the guy paid $31 to priority mail it when I paid $12 to ship it 1st class. Must of made an effort to get it out since it took him almost 2 weeks to ship it.

Its actually a little large for me, not by much. I'll check out some vintage 6 3/4 to see if they are closer to my size vs the 6 7/8. I remember measuring my noggin at 54.25cm. I'm going to try adding some felt in the hat band tonight. Does anyone know if vintage Cavanaghs run a little large?

Borsalino Alessandria

I arrived home this afternoon to find this at the door.
A Borsalino Alessandria in size 7 1\2 !

I never thought I would get one, but I did!

It had a cattleman crease but when I moved the felt it went right to a c-crown! Man this is a sweet hat! the brim is 2 7\8s , the front pinch is 4 1\2 and the back of the crown is 4 inches.

I also had a thin ribbon summer straw from SunBody waiting but I will put that in another thread.

Nice hat, Russ. I like the color. It looks like a real light gray to me. I'm a little surprised you went for the thin ribbon though. :D

Oh, baby! That hat was meant for your noggin, Rusty! Wow. Looks fantastic, and also looks to be in excellent shape. A great "must have" addition to the collection of the founding member of the Brotherhood. Well done! :eusa_clap :eusa_clap :eusa_clap

You know, to my eye, a Borsalino Allesandria has a certain classic swoop to the brim that just makes it stand out from other thin ribbons. You can see this in photos posted here on the Lounge. Perhaps it is the thinner felt that allows a Borso to kind of swoop into place -- but it really looks great. Anyone else think this, or is it just me...? [huh]

Cheers,

I thought I'd post this here. It's not a new hat, but it's a new hat stand. Ok, it's a coat stand, but it works really well for hats. It gets mine off the dresser and the kitchen counter and still keeps them out where I can see them. With this I can rotate a few on and a few off now and then and keep my hats moving through the rotation. What do you think?

OH YEAH! Rusty, that's a great example of what a Borsalino can be. They are really something special.

BobC, nice rack - so to speak. :D Really though, that is great. I've been keeping an eye out in my thrift store rounds for something that would work. Thanks for the link.

That's a good observation/question.

I've got six Borsalinos - five are marked Alessandria and one is a marked Trionfo. None of them are Open Road style. Of the Allies, they are all different styles and quality designations. I think "Alessandria" is neither a model name nor a felt quality designation. Some of my Borsos swoop lower than others. One of them has a fairly level brim with a subtle swoop.

[huh]

I do know that if one's head is long oval and you plunk a regular oval hat on, it works but it tends to make the brim sides go up a tick and the front to swoop down.

Nice one RBH! It looks a lot like my new one. The felt is really thin and light. It'll make a great summer felt.
